Our cat had kittens and after about 6 weeks, we gave all the kittens away except for one. So as told we seperated the momma from her kitten to give her a rest. We did this for 2 weeks. We now have both momma and son in the house. The kitten has been eating solid food for some time now, before all the kittens were given away, but now he wants to feed from the mom. We were told that she would swat him away or not let him feed, but she doesn't seem to care. Is this okay? or should we separate them again? Please help! IP: Logged |

I believe that you need to seperate them. THe mother won't stop making her milk unless there is no-one to feed it to. Once she stops making teh milk, you should't have any problems, seeing as there will be no more milk for the kitten!  IP: Logged |

Hi, at 6weeks old kittens will still feed from mum some kittens will even feed from her when they are 7months old. If mum is stil producing milk she will allow the kitten to feed. Everytime he goes to mum take him away, Have mum spayed and this should stop her from feeding him. Also just because he is still feeding from mum doesnt mean him will always do it he will just become a fat cat if he eating solids aswell.. Fresh water should be given at feed times as milk isnt good for cats. But dont worry to much mum will stop him if she dont want him feeding.. IP: Logged |

You should seperate them again. She will not stop making milk until there is no-one to drink it. Once she stops, however, she stops, and then you can put the two back togehter again. IP: Logged |

When Shana had her kittiens, we had a problem with one that wanted to continue nursing. We tried seperating them, taking him "off" when he tried and nothing seemed to work. Shana took care of it herself. One day she just whacked him in the head with her paw and nipped at his ear with her teeth. Put a stop to it from then on. Maybe they know when it's time to stop and take care of it naturally. IP: Logged |
