I'm new here. Hello everyone. Here is my question: My cat, Max, is 18 years old. He howls very loudly through most of the night--every night. My vet said he had hyperthyroidism and that howling can be a symptom. Max received radioiodine treatment and his numbers are now good. However, he still howls. He does not seem to be in any pain. He eats well, he plays, he purrs. I just don't know what to do. Any advice? IP: Logged |

do you keep your bedroom door closed at night? he might want to get closer to you. I know if i close my bedroom door at night then my cat will cry all night long. IP: Logged |

I do keep my bedroom door open. He roams through the apartment, from room to room, howling. He will stop howling and he will purr while I pet him, but as soon as I stop he howls again. IP: Logged |

OKAY, cats are werid i can tell you that i have had my 12 years old cat for 7 years, he is huge beautiful and my 5th baby literally (i have 4 children) he too howls, and I MEAN HOWLS, he is a 25 pound pure bred persian, and this is loud deep throated howling, through the night, we believe its just to hear himself he has also seen one of the top pure breed vets in canada and it is just that, .... to hear themselves..... nothing more. It is a huge pain especially when you have babies sleeping, but the thought for me is the night he doesnt do it he could be sick or dead so although it is annoying, "it could be way worse!!! think about it IP: Logged |

You're right, it could be worse. Max is still my buddy in spite of the howling. But a good night's sleep would be so nice. And why would he begin howling at this late stage of life? My vet has suggested kitty alzheimer's. Has anyone had any experience with that? My vet says anti-depressants might help. Any thoughts? IP: Logged |
