Hi, i've had my cat Simba since he was 6 months old and is now 2&1/2 years old. Unfortunately I have to go away for 6 months and have a friend who will look after him until my return (THANK GOD) I have to travel 5 hours by car to take Simba to his new home and am worried how he will adapt in his new place. Any words of advice how I can make this transition easier for him? I feel devastated that I have to leave him for that long a period but I have no other choice. Please help IP: Logged |

Your kitty should adjust just fine. To make the transition easier, I would take a bag of his old litter and mix it in with the litter at the new house so he recognizes a scent(I'm assuming that it will be a fresh box of litter, otherwise if its the same disregard this). Also give him an old shirt of your with your scent on it to give him some comfort. Also bring along any faveourite toys, blankets, items your kitty might have as well as treats or food he particularily enjoys. Bottom line - make sure he's spoiled! Also it might not hurt to already find a vet in the new area and give them your cats records. In addition, some vets have a disclaimer if the person bringing in the animal is not the owner, that the vet can call you to make a decision or you can give them free rein to do whatever your cat needs in case of emergency. Your kitty will miss you and won't understand but he won't forget you when you return. Don't worry too much! 6 months will go by fast! IP: Logged |

Cats are great when it comes to this sort of stuff. They handle things better than I think we give them credit for. Like it was said before, just give your cat familiar items and your cat will be just fine. Just be prepared when you come back your cat may be a little shy at first but they catch on real quick. I once left my cat for a week at a friends house. I know that isnt a long time but i was so sad. I was like a baby about it. Anyways i would think if you want something with your scent on it i would go with something from your bed. I left a pillow of mine with my cat and my friend said she didnt like getting off of it. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Thank you so much for your kind words of wisdom. I will be leaving late tomorrow and am just packing all his toys and blankets. sob sob. I went to see if I could buy cat food in bulk but it seems that the Petsmart here doesn't sell by the carton but by the can as opposed to what their website says but as long as Simba doesn't starve (i don't want to inconvenience my friend anymore). I will give him my pillow that he sleeps on every night thanks once again, I pray the 6 months fly so I can see him again  IP: Logged |
