Hi All,

Thank you all for your previous replies to my questions, you are all such a big help!!

I have another question - My cats are strictly indoor cats, and they love to sit in the windows to get some fresh air. I never thought about this, but someone was over my house and mentioned it - They said the cats could push the screens out of the windows, and possibly fall out!

Not sure why I never thought about that, but I do know screens have been known to tear and fall out if pushed on too much (which we all know how cats like to mess with things). So now that worries me. Is there anything I can get to protect my screens from coming loose so my cats can't fall out? I would hate to leave my windows shut, they love the fresh air!

I think it depends on how your screens fit in the window. The way mine are there is no way to get them out without taking the window out of its track. Do your cats push on the screens, mine never do that. My cats have started climbing the window screens. One of the screens had a little hole in it and one day I looked and there was a big hole with fur around it. One of the cats had pushed her way out. She was freaked out b/c she had never been outside so I left the door open and she ran back in. I would just make sure they are durable screens and watch for holes.

Hey Mandy,
My kitties love this too. I have the same fears. My husband says I have nothng to wory about but,in the back of my mind I am always worried! I am not sure if there is anything we can do. I would love to here some Ideals.

My screens do not push out easily but just to be safe I keep the windows closed (or block them with a large, unplugged fan) unless I am home. Someone on another board recommended getting "child safety screens" which can not be pushed out. These can probably be purchased at any type of Home store.

I have the same worry. So when I go out, I leave it open enough so they can crouch and look out - about 6 inches. I also have windows that wind outward so I leave those open enough that should the screen out, they can't squeeze out....my screens have fallen out before.....

We never had problems with the windows. My one cat loves to try and sharpen her claws on the screens (until we catch her). She's never pushed the screen out, though.

HOWEVER, a couple months ago, my youngest cat got really spooked and climbed up a screen. The screen fell out and she fell out of a second story window! I was so upset and worried. I didn't know if she got hurt and she had never been outside before. To make things worse, the neighbor's dogs were outside and she fell right at the fence line. I talked calmly out to her from the window while my husband rushed to get her back inside.

Thank God she was so shocked that she didn't run. She was a little dirty but wasn't hurt at all. That was a horrible day.

My point is, that you have valid worries. We haven't had a problem since then. Her falling out of the window was a freak accident, but it apparently does happen. We're very careful about what windows are left open. We are home whenever they are open. We haven't tried any devcies, though.

I live on the 12th floor of an apartment and we leave our screen door open (balcony), recently she's been climbing like crazy and I've started to worry. Thank goodness winter is coming.
