This illness is something everyone should know about. I lost my cat Miko last year to sudden death. Not knowing what happened to him. We took his sister, Missy to the Vets to be checked, and they found in the x-rays her heart was enlarged, and this is the what she had. With medication and follow ups, she lived almost 2 years beyond her brother. Sadley she died 10/11/03. It was something we knew might happen, as her Vet told us that she could throw a clot, and death would be quick. I was able to be home, and held her. I hope that no one has to go through this, as it is a painful thing to see such a young cat die. We love them so much.

Yes, it is something they say is genetic. I was told by my Vet, that maybe one of the parents had this HCM. I'm glad to hear that your friends cat is off the meds. I know it depends on how bad the illness is. Some say that it can progress slow or maybe fast. Missy never came off the medicine. They had her on Atenonol, baby aspirin, ferosmide, and Enelapril. The aspirin was given every 3rd day. Thank you for your thoughts. Time, I know will heal, but I'll miss her for a long time to come.
