Hi Mia... my female kitten is also named Pepper, hence my user name!

My vet told me that dandruff on a cat can be caused by a number of things... they could be allergic to something, or have a medical condition like ringworm, fungus, etc... there's also a parasite called Cheyletiella that has the appearance of dandruff. Also overweight cats that can't reach their back there to groom themselves, often get drandruff on their back.

My vet sells special keratinolytic shampoos that are formulated specifically for cat dandruff, and sprays with emollients that help moisturize the skin and decrease the flaking. So you might want to contact your vet and have him checked out first, just to make sure it's not a medical condition... and they can also give you something to treat the dandruff. Good luck!

yes pepper is kinda husky so maybe he can't reach his own back very well, he has been seen by a doctor and she wasn't very concerned when looking at it..so i'm guessing it must just be dry skin, but i do need something to rub on him.

Mia! My kitties had this exact problem. Newton had it a little worse than September. The fur on his back was dry and he had flakes. He shed a lot of fur. The vet told me it was due to his diet and to start giving him supplements with his food. It is this oily stuff you add to their food. It is good for skin and coat and eliminates dandruff. It contains fatty acids. The kind I use is from PetSmart. It is called Mirra-Coat O3. With Omega 3 Fatty acids. I saw improvement after about two weeks. You add 1/2 tsp for each 6 pounds of body weight.

Sometimes to much corn or cornstarch in the food will do this. Look at the ingredients and see how much is in it'd food.
We give our cat Inovonna and pet chlorella(which makes his fur faboulusly soft and silky amd he sheds very little for a long hair)

My cat had dandruff, so I started brushing her really well. It helped a lot, her coat is a lot better now.
