Hello, I have a six month old kitten with a broken/paralyzed tail. I don't know for sure how it happened; he is an outside cat and may have been hit by a car. His left back foot is slightly swollen. He limps but is walking better every day. His tail is still paralyzed after almost 2 weeks. About 2 inches of the end is losing hair and looks like it may fall off. He has absolutely no use of the tail and it just gets in the way of "nature calls". I have felt along the tail and found where it is broken, about two to three inches from his rear. Is it advisable to have the tail amputated at the break? Can this be done at home or only by a vet? ------------------ IP: Logged |

I would definetly take him to the vet. I don't think trying to remove his tail yourself is safe. I do not know what the vet would do for a broken tail, but I don't think it's something to mess with yourself. Good luck! Jodi IP: Logged |

Amputate the tail at home? Good god no, please do not attempt to do that, because it would cause severe pain for your cat. You definitely need to get your cat to a vet ASAP, it sounds like more is wrong then just the tail, and if he was hit by a car, he definitely needs medical treatment from a licensed vet. Wendy, I am glad to hear your cat is getting better each day. But did you take him to the vet for an exam? Because if he was hit by a car, he could have internal bleeding that you don't know about, I strongly urge you to take your cat to the vet ASAP. Best of luck, and keep us posted please!
