Just curious on which type of scoopable litter everyone uses. I have tried just about every single brand on the market from the cheap to the expensive brands, and no matter what kind I use, it still always has a strong ammonia/urine scent after about a day. I use an automated litter box (the Litter Robot) and it automatically rids the waste as soon as they go, so there is never any waste sitting in the litter box at all. I don't understand why there's always such a strong urine smell! HELP!!! IP: Logged |

I always use Arm and Hammer Baking soda litter, or Scoop Away for Multiple cats. And I always add baking soda to the litterbox. I don't have a problem with smell at all. If you scoop every day, it should not be too much of a problem. I don't have a problem with my house smelling like cat or ammonia. Is your cat covering his jobs? Some cats do not cover and that might make the smell more noticable. NTC IP: Logged |

NTC, thanks for your reply. I have 2 cats, and they both cover it up. Plus, like I mentioned, I have an automated box that immediately dumps the waste into a drawer right after they go, and I empty the drawer at least 3 times a day, which is way more then recommended (they say to empty it 2-3 times per week). So there is never ever any waste sitting in the litter or the drawer hardly at all. I've used Arm and Hammer brand litter also, and still had the same smell that I get with all brands. I don't get it!! Do you use regular baking soda in your litter box, or the Arm and Hammer cat litter deoderizer brand? Also, how much do you use in your litter?? Thanks again!! IP: Logged |

I use Tidy Cat scoop for multiple cats and sometimes Fresh Step scoop. My grandmother was complaining of a similar odor as you coming from her boxes...not sure if she ever figured out a solution though. [This message has been edited by nern (edited 10-08-2003).] IP: Logged |

I use MAXX Litter .. and I also use the animal baking soda. I clean the litter box once a week (scrub/wash) and I scoop every night, more if needed. I put the baking soda at the bottem of the litter box before putting the litter down and I also sprinkle some on top if it ever gets a lil stinky. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I use arm and hamer fresh scent and have really noticed a decrease in odor since I switched to it. Perhaps the smell is locked into the plastic of the container. Have you tried soaking that? Maybe a bleach and water mix to penetrate the plastic. What's the point of the automatic litter box if you still are tending to it more than once a day and still have odors? Maybe in the container the clumps aren't covered with dry litter as the would be if they were burried. IP: Logged |

Hi I used to use ScoopAway until they stopped distributing it in Canada. Now I use Maxx Cat which smells great! I have two cats and it lasts up to two weeks (with regular daily cleaning of course) IP: Logged |

Thank you all so much for your replies, you're all such a big help!!  I am currently using Fresh Step. I think it's just me, I have an extra sensitive nose, and I can smell even the faintest smell possible. Others in my house say they smell nothing, but it still bugs me that I can smell anything at all. My automated box is actually alot less work then a manual box, all I have to do is throw a bag away each day, I don't have to scoop anything myself. And it's great for the cats because they never have to step in dirty litter. I tend to create more work for myself sometimes I think LOL IP: Logged |

I bought some Arm and Hammer litter deoderizer tonight and spinkled it in the cat box, and wow.. that stuff really does work, so far anyway. I don't smell any odor at all in the box now, the litter smells nice and fresh. I completely change my scoopable litter at least once a week, so hopefully this stuff will keep on working and rid any urine smell! Thanks again for all the tips!! IP: Logged |

One thing no one else seemed to mention, are your cats spayed or nuetered? If they aren't that is why the smell is so strong. Non altered females especially have a strong ammonia smell to their urine. I would get them fixed if you haven't already done so it will really help. I use Tidy cats and love it. IP: Logged |

Mandy... I'm like you, I have a very extra sensitive nose, no smells get past me... which made finding the right products for the litter box quite a challenge for me. But I think I got that problem in check... I use regular Arm & Hammer baking soda in my kitties litter, and let me tell ya... that stuff works wonders!! I can't ever smell anything at all, which is a miracle for me. I've tried the Arm & Hammer litter deoderizer brand, but I didn't like the smell of that... too perfumey, so I just buy the regular baking soda... plus it's cheaper too. I use either Fresh Step or Arm & Hammer scoopable litter, they both work good with the baking soda. I also have a Litter Robot, just got it about 2 months ago... I love it! IP: Logged |

Daisy - Yes, my cats are fixed. I think the odor problem has finally been taken care of thanks to all of you good people and your suggestions. Mandy: I have a lot of cats and have tried just about every litter on the market. I have found that the best litter is either: I use Tidy cat now b/c it is cheaper where I live and it comes in a bigger size tub than the Arm & Hammer does. My mom has started using the Petco brand scoopable litter. You buy a big bucket then when it is empty you take it back and they re-fill it for you. She said it is cheaper to get it re-filled. I don't have a Petco where I live so I haven't tried that brand. Regular old baking soda does work great to periodically deodorize. When I clean my pans out I usually sprinkle some in the bottom before I put the litter in. IP: Logged |

I like the natural pine kitty litter, it is easy to work with, makes a great flowerbed fertilizer and eliminates all odors. not to mention it is 100% dust free. IP: Logged |

I just want to answer a question from the top of this thread. The reason why baking soda works is because it reduces the urine into ammonia. So initially you will smell more ammonia that normal, but after the gas disapates, the litter will be cleaner (and full of calcium (or sodium - can never remember with baking product names) carbonate but thats ok). I have four cats and a VERY sensitive nose. I switched from a scoopable litter to Feline Pine about a year ago, and I would never go back. The only time I can smell any pee is when I was neglecting my litter box duties for too long. When I first introduced the new litter though, I didn't follow the instructions on the bag that suggests mixing the old-type litter with the new to get the cats used to the new. As a result there were many "accidents". After I slowly weaned them off the old litter and on to the Feline Pine, they didn't have a problem. IP: Logged |

Unfortunately I can't use the Feline Pine, because I use an automated litter box called the Litter Robot, and you can't use that type of litter in it.  But luckily, the baking soda has been working great, I don't ever have any litter box odor at all now. IP: Logged |
