I have a 7 year old cat and I was recently yold she should be spayed. When I talked to my vet about this they said there was no risk involved( but I know this is not true). I'm not sure if the benifits will out weight the risks. Is it good to spay an older cat and what will the risks be. Please help I feel as if my vet does not have my pets best insterest at heart and is only in it for the money

If you think your vet is only in it for the money, you should find another vet.

I think every cat should be spayed or neutered, unless they are owned by a responsible breeder. There are slight risks involved with spaying (mainly with the anasthesia I think), which are outweighed by the benefits including population control. Even if you keep your cat indoors, they can escape. She could get out and get pregnant, kittens are a handful- trust me. My cats always drove me crazy when they were in heat. They roll around cry, they actually look pretty miserable so I always felt sorry for them. There are also health benefits to the cat. I would think that 7 years old is young enough that as long as your cat is healthy she should be fine with the surgery. I would shop around for another vet and consult one that I felt more comfortable with if I were in your situation.

I did some extensive reading on the subject and found that everyone should have their cats fixed. The biggest benifits are that it adds 3-5 years to the life of the cat, and more importantly it eliminates the risks of 3 different types of cancer.

Make sure that your vet does bloodwork before the surgery. It costs more, but there are things they can check to make sure the anaesthetic won't be too big of a risk.
