My kittie is approximately 3 years old and has had issues with a urinary tract blockage in the past. We put him on the Science Diet CD-OXL, it turns out he was allergic to the food. So, we went to Science Diet CD-Z. Well, within the first three weeks of starting this new diet, he began licking his hair off constantly. I decided to take him off this new food and put him on Science Diet maintenance (which is what he was eating before all these issues began and the diet changed). We seldom see him doing anything except licking and chewing at himself. We have an e-collar which we put on whenever we are home, but we are often gone for long periods of time each day. The vet recommended we not use the collar when we are not home.

Does anyone have any suggestions. I thought about trying benedryl, but haven't been able to find anything online that says how much is safe for a kittie. How long does it take for the allergens from the food to work through his system? My husband is getting frustrated because Webber keeps chewing and we just wish he wouldn't. Our other two kitties don't have any issues with skin problems. Please help with any information you might have.

Are you sure its not more than a food allergy? Cats can also be allergic to fleas, dust, pollen, household products,ect.
Don't quote me on this but I think it takes several weeks to see a change when there's a food allergy. Hill's Z/D is a prescription food for adverse food reactions and there is also one called IDV (not sure if these would be suitable for a cat that is prone to blockages though). If you don't see any changes you may want to consult your vet about trying one of these diets.

Thanks for the info. We have had him on the Science Diet Maintenance for about 2 weeks now, and so we are just watching him. This morning we put triple antibiotic ointment on his soars. They are now getting bumps and turning red. We may just have to take him to the vet soon.
