My cat Sadie seems to have a cold. The cold as been going around HUMANS lately, and I was wondering if she caught it from one of us? She sounds like she's congested and her throat appears to hurt. She tried to eat but acted like it hurt. The vet said I could give her some benedryl to help her relax. (she's always on guard because she HATES our other animals) Any ideas on what to do? I don't want her to go outside because I'm afraid it'll make her sicker? Is that possible? Thanks-

She could have caught it from a human, but probably not. The organisms that cause "colds" in cats are not usually the same ones that cats get. I would take the vets advice and give her the recommended dose of benadryl. I would not let her outside. I would keep her in a dark quiet place so she can sleep. Try giving her soft food and see if she will eat that. Sometimes when they are sick they don't want to eat at all b/d they can't smell. Make sure she is getting enough water, that is the main thing as cats can get dehydrated very fast. You can pinch her skin to make sure she is hydrated. When you let go it should go back in place automatically, if it doesn't she may be dehydrated.

Well, Sadie seems to be getting worse. She can hardley meow at all. Do cats get sore throats?

How can I help her in the meantime?

Would Clavamox help? I still have some leftover from where our Yorkie was sick. It says it's for cats too.

Is it unusual for her to be already getting sick? She's only 4 years old! How can I tell if she's getting an URI?
Thanks-

Clavamox could help depending on what she is sick with. Most "colds" are viruses and antibiotics wont help. I would give the vet a call and run it by him/her. If her breathing or purring sounds funny she probably should go to the vet. I think a phone call is in order, you can never be too careful.
