Our sweet little girl kitty who's 1 1/2 yrs old was caught in a trap (that's what our vet figured) 9/16/03. We live in a somewhat rural area and she came home to us dragging her mangled leg. We had two choices - put her to sleep or amputate her leg at the hip. We wanted to save her life so she had surgery to remove the leg. My question? Does anyone else out there have a three legged cat and if so, can they still lead a full life?

Any info is appreciated.

Hi!

Animals can definatly live full lives with three legs! I have known three legged dogs and cats - both with birth defects and amputated legs.

Animals can be much like humans and undergo depression once the leg has been removed. Be sure to look out for changes in your pets behaviour. Its a big change to be using 3 legs instead of 4 and if the same is true in animals as with people - they still may beable to "feel" their leg even though its not there.

Give your pet lots of love, understanding and help through this period. And then, there are animals who adjust immediately to three legs and act like they never had 4!

However, you may want to rethink your animal's life in the outdoors. You mentioned you live in a rural area and your cat may not be able to protect itself, run as fast or climb as well with three legs.

Best of luck!
