Hi There,

My beloved kitty got hit by a car over a week ago. We found him five days later. He was cold and not moving. He has a fractured pelvis which should heal (it's not crushed) but he has severe renal failure. The vet believes it's because there is a tear in the ureter or in the kidney area. He's not strong enough for an operation nor does the vet believe that that's the answer.

His creatinine levels are terrible (13) but he's *eating.* Bizarro. His energy is good too. We had him at the vet's a few days and he's been home with us for 5 days now and we're doing some sub-cutaneous fluids.

Are we foolish to hold out hope? His bloodwork is terrible but he's eating. Anyone have a kitty pull through like this?

Thanks so much for any success stories or information.

Sula

You are never foolish to hope. I have had vets tell me several times that animals should be put to sleep and the animals have pulled through and completely recovered. My cat got hit by a car when I was younger, the vet said we should put him down, but we didn't and he made it. He lived a long time after that although he lost a lot of his teeth. As long as your pet isn't in a lot of pain I would say give him a chance to fight, some cats just want to live so much that they make it.

My childhood cat got hit by a car. It actually hit her in the face. She was deaf and blind on the right side.

But, she survived and lived to be 18 years old. The doctors had their work cut out for them. Her face was practictally fractured in half - they had to wire her back up. The vet didn't give her high hopes but said they'd do what they could.

After recovering, our kitty was healthy, happy, and lived a full life. I hope your story ends that way. I'll keep your poor kitty in my thoughts. But, never lose hope!

I've also had amazing kitties pull through various situations when I thought there was little hope. Miracles happen if you let them. Please keep us updated on your little one!

My cat has gingivitis and might end up needing all his teeth pulled. I told someone this and she asked if I would put him to sleep if that happened. I just looked at her like she was crazy. So many people give up on pets before the pets are ready to give up. I applaud you for hanging in there and letting your kitty fight.

I really can not tell you how many times vets have told me to put cats down and they pulled through and recovered. Sometimes I have agreed with the vet and put them down, it depends on the situation and the animal.

Here is another happy story that might help you. I found two orphaned kittens and started feeding and caring for them. One didn't make it through the first night, but the other one did. When she was two days old she got sick, I took her to the vet. The vet basically told me that she was going to die b/c she was too little to fight off the infection. I burst into tears in the vets office. I think more to console me than anything she sent me home with antibiotics. I gave the kitty antibiotics and spent the whole night with her sleeping on my chest. She is a tough little kitty and she made it. She is sleeping on the bed behind me right now. Miracles do happen. If you believe in God, pray for your kitty. Thats what I do. Recognize that sometimes they are ready to go though. I would talk to your kitty and ask him if he's ready or if he wants to stay. I think they understand.

Very good words. I know it sounds silly, but I have had this experience with a mouse. My daugher's mouse has mycoplasma, a bacterial infection that cannot be cured. She had it so long before we realized something was wrong that permanent damage was done to her lungs. She is now on medication twice daily for the rest of her life, and the symptoms are controlled but she will never be 100% and she can never stop taking the medication. I thought about putting her down, but most mice with this disease don't last more than a couple of months, especially if untreated. She has had the disease most of her life - she had it for about 9 months before we found out and started treating her, and it has been 4 months since then. I finally decided that if she didn't want to live, she would have succumbed long ago. I just don't tell my husband what her medicine costs.

I know all you cat and dog people are laughing because it is a mouse, but my littlest ones get the same care and attention as my larger pets.

My 13 year old kitty got kidney problems out of the blue. His blood level was in the 90 's when it should be 12. Every day he went down and down which was good. They kept him on I.V fluids for a week but he had to be force fed. The vet sent him home to see if he would eat at home but he wouldn't. He wasn't himself and was very sick so we put him to sleep. But since your cat is eating he might be o.k. If my cat would eat on his own we wouldn't have put him down but what kind of life is it for a cat when you have to drag him out from under the bed to feed him and squirt water down his throat? If your cat keeps eating and has his levels drop he might be o.k but you'll have to make sure he's well hydrated all the time. Keep hoping! Good luck!
