I forgot to mention this but sometime ago my cat vomited up what appeared to be cat turds....

why would a cat eat his own crap?

Its quite possible that this was not a turd but was a hairball. The first time I ever saw a hairball I also thought it was poop.

Usually, when a cat eats his own poop, it means that he's not getting all the nutrients he needs and is trying to get more protein. A high quality kitten food should help this problem, like Wellness or Royal Canin. Good luck!
