My 1 yr. old cat has a cold. I have been unemployed going on 6 months, needless to say I am short on funds. Can I give my cat and even my pup of 8 months any over the counter medication? Any info. would help! ------------------ IP: Logged |

If it's just a little cold, it might just clear up on its own. I would call the vet and ask if there's anything you can give them. Watch them closely and if they get worse or have dangerous signs (listlessness, not eating for more than a couple days, not going to the bathroom, not drinking water, pain, etc) then you'll need to bite the bullet and bring them in to the vet. Are there any vet schools near you? Sometimes that is a lower cost alternative.

I suggest getting a job .. animals need care. And not just when they are sick. IP: Logged |

Hi May I suggest taking a look at the post "What antibiotics can I give my cat" Or something to that effect. There have been a slew of answers there. But also, talk to your vet as Jamiya mentioned before giving a cat anything in case it is poisonous. Cat's colds usually clear up on their own after a week or two. However, keep an eye out for their breathing (i.e. a raspy noise, esp. during purring) which may indicate fluid/mucous in the lungs which could indicate something more serious.
