What is the medicine based with? If it is fiber, then that will stop your cat up pretty good. For hairballs, I would try Vet Basis brand Hairball Gel. It's vegetable oil based, not petroleum based. For the constipation, I would use some canned pumpkin to aid in digestion. If he constantly has hairballs, add a high quality wet food to his diet every day for the moisture. AvoDerm Hairball is a good dry food also. It has pea fiber that helps break apart the hair in his system. Hope that helps!

I agree with the other poster on giving her some canned pumpkin for the constipation.

I like petromalt for hairballs, my cats love it. My cats wont eat canned pumpkin. I use metimucil (sp?) mixed with soft food for extra fiber. Works well as long as they will eat the soft food.

I accidently sent my message too many times before. As for the Metamucil, cats DO NOT digest fiber like humans. They are obligate carnivores, which means that they are meant to eat primarily meat and partially digested grains from the bellies of their prey. If you give a cat straight fiber, it will impact his system. THIS IS NOT A GOOD IDEA. Petromalt works and some cats like it, but that's not the point. Petroleum based products coat the inside of the stomache so that they cannot absorb the nutrients from their food. Infrequent use of this product might be OK, but I wouldn't recommend it. My cat won't eat canned pumpkin either. I have to force it. I put it in a syringe and put it in her mouth. She may not like it, but she needs it sometimes.
