I am so frustrated with our 1 year old indoor cat. She is wonderful in every way except a bad habit that we can't seem to break. She rips and tears everything with her teeth. We got her at 7 weeks old and she tries to follow as many rules as possible although she does keep testing. As a kitten, she discovered a loose piece of wall paper in the bedroom and peeled off a whole section with her teeth.
We've had to recover both of the bed box spring dust covers with heavier material as she's ripped through both. She is currently trying to rip through the new material. We've just returned from a visit with my parents where she ripped 3 out of 4 of the bed dust covers, and tore holes in the material underneath both sofas.
We've tried a spray bottle, yelling at her, clapping the hands and even a swat on her rear. We've tried at "No Scratch" spray on the material. She just won't stop! Help!!!!

Get some sticky paws...you can check them out at www.stickypaws.com
These can be applied to the material and should deter her from tearing at it.

Thanks. I was thinking of the double sided tape more for scratching problems but it should work for her using her teeth. I'll give it a try. I may need a lot of tape. This morning she was chewing the based of our pole lamp. I think she may be a dog in cat's fur.

A friend of mine has a cat that chews on things like a dog. It's truly amazing! He has chewed apart the corner of a large cardboard box he likes to lie on, and tons of other things in the house. We always thought maybe he was raised by dogs....

Mine's the same way except she just goes for the little stuff like cardboard, paper, etc. She especially loves to do it at night while I'm sleeping just to see how far she can go to annoy me Now I baracade all paper items so she can't get to them... but I allow her to have junk mail once in a while =) They also need to rephrase "the dog ate my homework" because she ate my school work once when I was in college.

She's also a bird too- she loves to bite anything shiny and metallic... watches, rings, and finger nail files are some of her favorites =) She wouldn't harm a fly but she loves paper and metal!

One of mine is a chewer too. He mostly seems interested in cardboard but will also chew on plastic bags if he has a chance to. I have to keep all platic bags out of sight and reach.

My kitten also chews on the corners of things sometimes. I think it is a late teething thing with her back molars, but I'm not sure. Maybe put some Bitter Apple (a spray available in most pet stores) to deter her. Also, go to your local natural pet food store and ask them for names of good cat behaviorists.
