Well, I took my kitten to the vet, and he is on an IV and antibiotics. The vet thinks he has FIV, but the tests haven't come back yet. He thinks we should put him down. I told him I wanted to wait until tomorrow morning. Apparently he is very lethargic. Could he get better? He is 5 months old. How could have gotten FIV? He's been out in my front yard, but only when I was with him. I have another cat, but they have never fought.

Im very sorry to hear this. Where did you get him from? Maybe the entire litter was infected. Just to be safe I would have your other cat tested as well.

Here is some info. on FIV: http://web.vet.cornell.edu/Public/FHC/fiv.html
Quoted from site:
The primary mode of transmission is through bite wounds. Casual, nonaggressive contact among cats does not appear to be an efficient route of spreading FIV. On rare occasions, the disease is transmitted from an infected mother cat to her kittens during gestation, during passage through the birth canal, or when the newborn kittens ingest infected milk. Sexual contact probably is not a primary means of spreading FIV.
