I know this topic was just posted but I have a different situation. my eight year old indoor /outdoor cat suddenly disappeared when it was time to come in for the night. This happened twice in a week. So he slept outside, (I kept dog door open and he wandered in sometime during the night. Well now he has a taste of nightlife and absolutley goes crazy when I bring him in at night. So in the middle of the night he just starts howling because he wants out and he wont stop. It sounds like we are torturing him. My husband is to the point of just let him, but we live in the country. This has been going on for a week now,- I am exhausted with lack of sleep.
Any suggestions?

Is your cat neutered? If not, it sounds like there may be female cats in the neighborhood that are in heat and attracting him. I've heard they will howl when they sense a female cat in heat nearby. So if he's not neutered, I would suggest getting that done to prevent him from howling at night.

If he is neutered, just continue to keep him indoors, and he will eventually see that you're the boss, and he's not going to win by crying. I have a cat that constantly cries about things when he doesn't get his way, but he eventually stops when I continue to be firm and stick to my guns with him.
