We have a 2 year old male cat part maine coon. We adopted him at a few months old and he was never abused. He is a lovers and very well mannered cat. He is the only animal and we have no children so he gets loads of attention and play time ~mostly with daddy and I do the feedings and cleanings and he sleeps next to me and I am always grooming him and loving dovie smuching on him.
Ok given all this information why is it he is biting only me? I mean not love play bites but what I call vicious attacks with the ears back. Out of nowhere he will do this and chace me into a corner and attack. He gets this attack mode look even that I can tell it's about to happen. I have spanked him only to get even more vicous bite attacks. Sometimes I have to lock him out of my room while getting ready for work in the morning because he will not stop attacking. WHAT IS GOING ON? IS HE TRYING TO TELL ME SOMETHING I"M JUST NOT GETTING? WHY ONLY ME AND NOT MY HUSBAND? IS THIS JUST WILD CAT PLAY ? It's scares me but I am not going to fear my own cat and I certainly love him to death and will not get rid of him for this and want to correct this behavior asap.
Any input or help would be appreciated

Hi well first of all WHO THE HELL SPANKS THERE CAT dont you think that that will make him even more mad DUH. And talk about abusing cats. Second if he has his "attack mode" don't forget to not be scared animals know when people are scared at ofcourse that makes them even more powerful. Now what you do when he is in his attack mode show him who is the boss by doing that get big show your evil eye and dont get scared and tell him no not screaming but in a quite but loud strong voice saying no and talk to him. Tell him why you dont like that but show him who is the boss dont forget to not be scared and show the evil eye. KEEP US POSTED

I didn't know spanking a cat would make them attack more. I was told to roll up a newspaper and spank when he acted out to train. Well you see where that has gotten me! I have showed him the evil eye and that I am boss but yet he still attacks me only...sometimes to the point where only my husband can get him off me. Could this be because I spanked him and he is now hating me for it?
I think the cat is abusing me I am not abusing him in no way shape or form...he is my baby 100% and that is why I am posting here for help on why this is happening and not getting rid of him.

Ok i was a little bit mad but dont ever hurt your cat by spanking or whatever. Now you have to ask this question to your self is this working for you? yes or no? I do understand that no one should give a way there cat but if its getting so bad are you sure? Its going to work? now is this cat nutered probably yes but still if it isnt that is a great idea! KEEP US POSTED PLEASE.

These attacks are not everyday so i will live with it if I have too. But what gets me is why did they start after 2years? I must be doing something to bring it on. I think he is wanting to play.
thanks

In some way, your cat must think you are approving. It may be as simple as you give him attention when he does this, meaning your "attention" is rewarding him despite the fact that it is negative. I used to do the whole "spray your cat with water when he's bad." It didn't help at all and I hated doing it. Soon I realized he LIKES water and by me spraying him, he thought it was a reward. My advice: Immediately say "NO" in a loud, strong voice; don't say another word then and pick him up and shut him in a bedroom for 15 minutes; when you let him out, just open the door and let him come out on his own instead of picking him up and giving him kisses. Is he neutered? It would make a big difference. Good luck!

I have a hard time thinking this is the reason. He is our whole life and everything to us. We cater to his every want/need. Like I said he is our baby and we play with him nonstop. He sleep all suggles up to me everynight.
Becasue he tends to do it when dad has left in the morning I am thinking he is trying to tell me to stay and play instead of leaving for work. But that he sometimes gets me in the eveings when we are both there. WERID?

Kitty,
That is exactly how I punish him and he still does it. He is neutered. Now I do point my finger when I say NO NO BAD KITTY~maybe he is looking at that as a play sign. Putting him in a time out outside the room works sometimes but no everytime. He could come in all sweet and meow and he could get on the hid leggs and rare up and attack.

I have one cat who bites and attacks my partner. This started a year after we got her and she never even puts a claw out a me.
We haven't exactly manged to remedy the situation but we have found with all of our cats if they are acting out of turn a quick blow in their face soon stops them. Alternatively if the attack is very bad take a handful of the scruff of your cats neck and lie them on their back. My vet assures me this does not hurt them and mimics what the mother cat would do to her kitten if it was acting up.
I think perhaps cats react to pheramones in the air that we can't smell and this can make them agitated. Does your cat attack you at a regular time? If so it might be this.

Iris do you mean blow air into his face?
No regular time of attacks~mostly in the AM when I am the only one left in the home before I go to work and in the later evening when I am going to bed. A few times a week and other weeks he doesn't do it at all. Nothing I can pin point that triggers it.

Isis I do not agree with your veterinarian. After a cat is 2 yars or older you shouldN'T pick up the cat by the scurff this does hurt the cat after it growth up. It dosnt hurt a kitten because its skin is very loose when its little but his mom dosnt do it at the age of 2! So I do not recomend ANY ONE picking up there cat by the scurf

Sorry I have to disagree with you, the scruff of a cat's neck is fatty tissue, this is why vets often inject there because it hurts a lot less.
It does not hurt the cat at all, I don't mean really squeeze the scruff tight of course this would hurt but gently doing this and turning them onto their back causes them no pain whatsoever. I think you will also find it is a lot better than most people's reaction to a cat attack which is to shake the cat, pull at it or end up throwing it on the floor. I have already said I would only advocate this when all else fails in getting your cat off.

And yes I did mean blow air in their face... not hard but it just makes them turn away and give up what they are doing. I always make sure I go and give them a stroke a couple of minutes after I have done this. I don't think that chastising them for long periods of time works as they forget what they have done wrong... bit like children really!

I have to say lovelybird you just seem to diasgree with people for the sake of it. How about you find a better way to get your point across than criticizing people???

After cats are grown I don't think it is good to support there whole weight by the scruff. When my cats are bad I sometimes hold the scruff with one hand and put my other hand under their back feet to support some weight. Holding the scruff tells them you are the boss, its how their mom would get them. She isn't supporting the cats whole weight up by the scruff, she is only turning it over on its back and holding the scruff. I agree that this wont hurt the cat and is a good way to show you are in charge.

I dont agree that there mom shows them that she is the boss by doing that with my experince the mom cat will just smack the kitten. She picks up the cat by the scurff to move it around.

Lovely bird 25,
So if you beleive the mother cat disaplines the kitten with a smack....than why is it you told me in the beginning posting:
"WHO THE HELL SPANKS THERE CATS...IT'S ABUSE.DUH!" YOUR WORDS.
Isn't that the same as what mommy cat would do(per what you just replied above)? Why is that ok but me doing it not ok? We are not talking about a hard core spank your butt~yet more like a love tap spat spat bad baby boy....NO NO. Now to me that's the same kind of punishment and not really a bad thing. It has happened maybe all of 2 times in 3 years.
Just curious what you take is on the difference?

WoW! what an interesting subject. my aunt used to have a cat that did the same thing to my cousin, and we asked the vet, and he said to either blow in its face, flick them on the nose (not very hard, you do not want to hurt her, just tell her no!)OR lightly flick her ear. It showed immediate results, and i for one think that you should try it. Lovely_bird25, you contradict yourself in such a way that leads me to believe you do not REALLY know what you are talking about, i am not meaning to offend you, just to tell you, that you need to get your facts straight before you post, i only give info that i have heard from a vet, or an informative website. So please, lets not argue, we aren't children, just don't say anything unless it is nice from now on

Thank you daphne! I couldn't say it myself but felt the same way especially since this was my first posting and she was my first reply.......OUCH it hurt! Ok, I'm over it now. I know I don't abuse my baby and crazy madly in love with that critter. I just don't know why he likes to attack me sometimes ( I am almost sure he is asking me to stay and play)
P.s. I like your three suggestions and will try the blowing first and try not to pull away so he knows I don't want to play that way.

well, i am glad i coiuld help! if you have any more questions about your cat you can post, or you can e-mail me at daphnejordan@hotmail.com
I think maybe, your cat is either wanting you to stay and play, or maybe your cat is like mine, she gets in a bad mood if i wear perfumes, so i also have to wear unscented lotions and deodorants! Or it may be the simple desire to hunt or play rough, my cat has a climb tree and when her nose turns pink (which i think means she is getting wild and wants to play) she runs around, and then climbs up the tree in a pink nosed rage, after about 5 minutes of running and exploring her tree (we put cat nip or a treat or a toy hidden inside the tree for her to find!) she calms down and becomes quite the sweetheart.

The SAME thing happened with a male Siamese cat that my ex boyfriend and I raised from a kitten. This cat had TONS of love and devotion all growing up so we know he was never abused. I broke up with my boyfriend, moved out, and later got back with him. The cat (named "BEAR") would go OUT OF HIW WAY to find me and attack me!!! And he was NOT playing!!! He would growl, hiss, ears back and jump my leg if I walked by, scractching the h*** out of me, biting, and attacking my face if I let him get too close. I didn't get it... after all I was his mommy who raised him from 8 weeks old!!! Now all I had to do was be in the same room as him and he'd growl at me!!! I had NEVER had a cat not love me!!!
Well I finally took him to a cat specialist vet who told me he had "STATUS AGRESSION" because he was JEALOUS of me because he was so bonded to my boyfriend that he (Bear) wanted me GONE. We put him on Elavil, an old anti depressant, to mellow him out. It helped him but also made him really sleepy. I left that boyfriend for good so Bear isn't an issue anymore, but maybe meds could help your cat.

That is an option, but if it were me i wouildn't go for it, i don't like putting animals on any type of drug unless they need it to ease pain, and even then, i am weary of it. Not that it isn't a good idea, i just wouldn't do it unless it was my final option... of course, doing this doesn't mean you don't love your cat as much as people who don't give their animals drugs, it just means that it is an option for some, while for others it is not....

Ambercat this is interesting and maybe he is jealous of me taking himn away from daddy & his play time (since daddy does the majority of palaying with him before I get home) As long as they are not too frequent I will deaL with it. His attacks on me are not quit as serious as your were...no growl/hissing..just a quick bite.

Daphane I noticed my cats nose turns colors too but never thought to notice when and why so I will diffently take note of that next time he attacks.O agree I thinks it's a come on and play with me mommy like dady does kind of biting. And wow I never thought my perfume might triggers it. I know he hates my hairspraying and usually leaves the bedroom when I'm spraying in the bathroom. So maybe that is it too.

Thank you all for you opinions and assistance. It has offfered me a few insights and things to take note of to figure this out with.

This is my first time checking out this forum and dj your problem peaked my interest. Your problem sounds exactly like my problem with my cat Moe. I prefer to say he has anger management issues. We have had him for about 5 years and he used to attack me often and for no reason however he would rarely attack my boyfriend. I also experienced the rath of the cat after rolling up the newspaper and lightly tapping him on his behind to discipline him. I also found that pointing at him and saying "no" wasn't too effective either. For one, he hates it when you point a finger in his face and that would just aggravate him more.
The one difference between Moe attacking me and Moe attacking my boyfriend was that I would run away or give Moe the reaction he wanted which showed fear. My boyfriend on the other hand would lay Moe on his side and hold him down until he stopped the angry cat meow. Yes, I know some of you may say "how mean!" but the reality of it is cats like a heirarchy. In my cat's mind my boyfriend was boss because he wouldn't put up with any of Moe's attacks and Moe knew it. Me, on the other hand, I was the play thing who Moe could attack and chase. The attacks subsided after I stopped running away and (I know it sounds odd) but I stood up to the cat. He would usually attack my arms when I was sitting. Instead of instantly pulling my arm away I would tell him "bad" in a firm voice (not "no" because it sounds too much like "Moe"). If he didn't stop biting I would pry him off my arm and hold him firmly where he was standing so he couldn't attack and tell him he is bad. I would hold him until the angry cat meowing stopped then let him go. He would usually get that "I'm going to attack you again" look and I would just firmly say no and that would usually end the attack. Trust me, you are going to have some battle wounds the first few times but once he realizes you are also the boss the attacks will drastically decrease. Other quick solutions if I wasn't in the mood to argue with the cat was to cover up my arms with a blanket or better yet throw the blanket on the cat. Like all cats he has quite a short memory and by the time he found his way out of the blanket he would forget that he was about to attack. A water bottle is also effective however Moe was a little too smart for that and realized that if I didn't have the water bottle nearby he could attack without getting sprayed.
Moe still attacks the odd time but not like he used to and the "attack" usually only consists of a quick bite and then he backs away and gets the "oh I'm in trouble look".
I hope this helps. If this is the only cat you have another thing that may help is to consider getting another cat. We found that Moe was so bored and lonely home alone all day that we got him a cat friend. After we got another cat Moe was less likely to attack us because he had another cat to play with.
