Ok, many pet lovers are also poor. And vet visits are really expensive at times. What do you do? I say, find a vet who will work with you. Most vets will since they have a soft heart for animals and will either work on a payment plan or send you somewhere a little less expensive who can help you. When it comes to finding strays who happen to be sick, my motto is take it to a vet or the ASPCA or the Humane Society. Someone should be able to help. Being poor is no excuse when it comes to one's moral responsibility. How can we call ourselves animal lovers when we allow the almighty dollar to so easily sway our convictions? Sounds self-righteous? Well, I'm talking from experience and there's nothing like the guilt that comes from finding the sick and not doing enough. We do more for humans every day than for all the stray animals out there. Wish there were more no-kill shelters, and cheaper vet care for those with limited means. If we just keep working at it, maybe we could change the system. Money makes the world go round, but it shouldn't be the end all be all of our thoughts and actions. Thanks for listening. IP: Logged |

Well for one I think you shouldn't take on the responsibility of a pet unless you are prepared to spend the money, however you get it, to treat that pet if it gets sick. if you have very little money, why not consider pet insurance? for $10 a month you can cover your pet for accidents and one time illnesses. here is a great pet insurance company that offers several different plans for the US and Canada. at a low cost (lower than emergency surgery at any rate!!) I wish I had thought of this before Jessie ate tape. But I am for sure going to get it now! IP: Logged |

I use "Care Credit" sometimes http://www.carecredit.com which has come in quite handy on several ocasions when I was short on cash. Even putting $5 away each week might be helpful...it adds up quick and when the time comes that a vet visit is neccessary that money will be there. IP: Logged |
