My cat is otherwise very healthy, but he vomits several times each month. I have taken him to the vet several times and he has been tested for diabetes and other things, and she said he is healthy but to keep an eye on his weight. He does lose weight very very slowly and stays pretty thin, and I hate to see him vomit. I now feed him sensitive stomach cat food and that helps, but he still vomits. Does anyone have a cat that does this or any advice as to why he does this? I can't identify any particular food or reason he does it, and he seems to get the hiccups once a while, too! Is it possible for cats to have acid reflux? Please advise! IP: Logged |

It could be hairballs. When I have a problem with that I give out petromalt, its a brand of hairball remedy. There are other brands, but they are basically the same. Its a past that you squeeze on your finger or a spoon and they lick it off - cats love it. Giving that regularly always takes care of my throwing up problems. IP: Logged |

when he vomits, what does it look like? does it look like a big pile of uneaten dry food? (do you feed him dry food?) sometimes cats will overeat dry food and then it expands in their stomach because of the digestional juices, and the cat just throws the whole bunch up. one of mine does this a lot. I don't think it really hurts them. if the 'vomit' is just foam or liquid with a hair chunk in it, that's a hairball, and the petromalt should help (they also make hairball formula pet food, and also brushing your cat regularly will help) you said he is losing weight, how often do you feed him? does he have dry food on demand (in a bowl, always out?) do you supplement with wet food? maybe you need to feed him more. of course, you don't really want an overweight cat either. ask your vet about the ideal weight for your cat IP: Logged |

When he vomits it is typically right after eating and it looks pretty much like it did before he ate it! I don't think he chews well. The sensitive stomach food I give him I just leave out all day in a bowl and he nibbles as he pleases. It is in small, crunchy little balls. Then he gets one-half of a can of Fancy Feast at night as a treat, which the vet said was okay. He does throw up the Fancy Feast more than the crunchy stuff, but if I don't give it to him he whines until I do (he's pretty relentless about it, actually). It doesn't really seem to have hair in it, so I don't know if it is a hair problem or not. I comb him a couple of times per week (he's short hair) to make sure he doesn't lick up too much fur. I've tried hairball treats but they didn't seem to do much. Any more advice? Thanks for the responses! IP: Logged |

haha... yes my cat is a fancy feast addict too! she also loves the Whiskas pouches... if he is throwing up shortly after eating I would assume it's just an overeating issue. I know it's a pain to clean up but it's probably not an indication of sickness in the cat. maybe you could find something he likes as much as fancy feast but doesn't cause vomiting as much? I used to feed mine 9-lives sliced meat from a can and my one cat *always* threw it up so I just stuck with what stayed down for them. IP: Logged |

I have tried the petromalt even when they throw up is mostly food, and it seemed to help. Could have just been coincidence, but it might be worth a try. My cats think it is a treat b/c they like it so much. IP: Logged |
