Hi

Is is possible for a cat to develop schizophrenia? I have a very nervous cat who seems to see things that the other cat doesn't and as a result slinks off and hides for hours or a day at a time. At the moment she has developed a fear of the rain, which has been coming down for the past week and been hiding under the bed. She is 5 and has never been afriad of rain before(and there is no thunder).

There have been a ton of other incidents since I've had her and when I've looked up the symptoms of schizophrenia she would fit the profile to a "T" of what a human would go through. Has anyone heard of any documented cases of animals developing this?

I've never heard of a cat getting that. Maybe your cat is just super-sensitive and a bit edgy? Cats are highly sensitive creatures anyway. Try holding her a petting her while showing her stuff she's scared of. Reassure her, and if she gets too freaky, don't force her to stay.
Could someone have done something to her to make her this way? We used to have a cat that after he went to the neighbor's house once, became unusually afraid of men. If he even heard a man's voice (other than my dad's) he would freak out and run and hide.

Hello, I am really sorry to have to tell you that YES...cats can become schizophrenic. I had a beautiful calico/torti for 4 years and she developed schizophrenia. She stated peeing in my bed, in the bathtub, in my daughters bed. She also became very scittish, if you would walk up to her and pet her she would jump a foot in the air, she startled VERY EASILY. The vet put her on kitty prozac, but it did no good. She was miserable and quite frankly so was I. She actually peed right on me sometimes in the night. I was heartbroken, but the only thing we could do was to put her to sleep, the vet assured me that there was nothing more that we could do. Since it sounds like your cat is not doing anything distructive, perhaps you could struggle through with the prozac, or perhaps kitty valium. The chances of a cat developing schizophrenia greatly increase if the cat is calico or tortishell. I would ask your vet for more information. I hope that this helps.

Thanks Jewelzazner. I am sorry to hear about your cat. However, your info helps! I spoke to my vet and he said he never heard of a cat developing it but told me that calicos have a tendency to be more skittish than other cats. But with your info I will do some more research. I don't want to have to put her on meds unless absolutly necessary but at least I know there are options if things get worse. Many thanks!!!!
