I have written before -- I live on a large farm with lots of kitties. Our local animal shelter is having a low-cost spay/neuter clinic soon. They told me they only have spots for males left and I have about 10 males I would like to get fixed. They said the cats need to be at least 2 pounds and that they should be recuperated by the next day (although they don't stay at the shelter for recuperation). Does this sound correct? My biggest concern is to make sure the cats will be OK going back to the barn right after the surgery. I don't know much about male cats getting fixed... is there any risk of infection, should they not be jumping, etc.? I really would like to get some of our kitties fixed -- I love them so much and don't want the stress on the females always having kittens and the stress on the males always looking for females. However, I certainly do not want to put them at any risk getting fixed. Any help would be greatly appreciated -- thank you!

There is nothing to worry about. Every shelter does things differently, some they stay over night, others they come home that day. They aren't suppose to do a lot of jumping, but I think the risk of infection is low. Maybe you could stick them in a room for the night or something because they are groggy and could fall and hurt themselves if they got high up. You should definetly get them fixed, you will be doing a world of good for the cats. They benefits outweigh the bad.

My males have always seemed to bounce right back to their normal selves by the next day. Most of the time I have kept them seperate from the other cats for the first day to ensure that they remained less active.
Im sure yours will be fine but if your really concerned just ask at the shelter if its okay to put them right back in the barn afterwards. They should be able to tell you for sure.

I think all your kitties will be fine! I also think you are very noble to get all 10 of them fixed! This will help with over popualations greatly! (At least more than you would ever think) =)

You will need to get the females fixed too. One female in heat will attract males from miles around.
Kudos for getting them fixed. I'm helping out at a shelter and the number of unwanted kittens each spring is horrible.

Thanks to each of you who responded! I appreciate it very much. I am a worrier when it comes to the kitties Yes, I have made some calls about getting our females fixed, too, however this clinic is just for males. I'm in the process of rounding up enough cat carriers so the kitties can recuperate the rest of the day in a closed location. Thank you again for your help...
