My 16 year old's fur is turning yellow. Is this a normal part of aging? I hope someone can help me. She also doesn't seem to be able to clean herself as well as she used to.

Hi.

In response to your question regarding your senior citizen "putty" not cleaning herself as well as she used to .... completely understandable and normal. I have had a few senior citizens in my home and at 16 they are actually quite old and may need some help from their human friends such as combing and cleaning.

As far as the fur turning yellow ... what colour was her fur originally? Again, this could be due to age and perhaps she needs supplements to replenish her fur. You may also want to watch for signs of kidney failure or diabetes since this becomes a major factor in our senior citizen pussycats.

If your cat is eating and acting normally, I wouldn't be too concerned although it may not hurt to get her a checkup to make sure she's OK healthwise.

Her fur is black and white, the white area is what is yellowing. She is pretty healthy, I just had a check up in March. She does have a thyroid problem, but she's had it for years. Thanks for your help

Hi.

I wouldn't worry about it - my Siamese who was well over 16 years old had some yellowing in her fur. As long as she is eating well and is happy, I wouldn't worry about it.

Just watch for signs of excessive drinking or urinating which could be signs of kidney or diabetic problems.

Enjoy your Senior Citizen girl and pamper her, she's certainly living a good and long life.
