I have a calico that is 17 yrs old.-She is an indoor cat and always was very fat and healthy-She started losing weight last year and a trip to the vet showed nothing but that she is getting old-She was eating very well, in fact, had a huge appetite until last weekend-She stopped eating altogether and just lays around-She always purred a lot-stopped doing that too, but I noticed her purring again yesterday-She drinks plenty of water and milk but no food at all-I am afraid if I take her to the vet, they will suggest putting her down-I cannot bring myself to do that-She doesn't seem to be in pain, just weak and tired--I am sick about this and need some suggestions IP: Logged |

There may be a good reason for her to have stopped eating such as a bad tooth or gums or mouth sore. You really should get her checked by a vet..it may not be as bad as you think, especially if she seems otherwise healthy. IP: Logged |

Wanted to add, it would not be uncommon for an elderly cat to lose some or most of its sense of smell...in which case there might be a decrease in appetite caused by your cat not being able to smell what it is eating. Just an idea. IP: Logged |

Hi-Thanks for your advise-She seems a little more perky today-I tried feeding her some baby food out of a syringe-Funny you should mention a bad tooth-One of her teeth looked a funny color when I was feeding her just now-I think I will take your advise-I am hoping she has a few more good years left-Thanks again IP: Logged |
