We have a desexed three year old Russian blue who seems to have lost an awful lot of weight of late and is also losing his fur around the back half end of his body (if that makes any sense).....we had him on roo meat and were told that was too lean...so now we buy him varied types of cat foods...and also the best fur ball kibble....what could be wrong with him.....any ideas or any help would be appreciated.

Is it possible he has fleas? Last year one of mine licked the hair off his bottom half...it looked like he had taken off his pants. He was also losing weight at this time and seemed depressed. I searched him for fleas but couldnt find any on him but upon taking him to the vet it was discovered he did indeed have fleas and they were bothering him that much that he licked the hair off his body. Treated him with Advantage and he's been fine ever since. Stress can also be a cause.

Thanks for your advice nern...both your comments seem feesable...have search the cat and no I can`t see any fleas...but that doesn`t necessarily mean he has none.....on the other hand the stress factor could also be a problem...hubby and I live on our own and our children have moved in with us...they have sold their house and are looking for another to buy.....and Spike is not used to children either....he has done a fair bit of hiding of late.....I also notice that (our cat has never been a cuddly cat) he is jumping on mine or hubbies lap for attention....which makes me think this may be the problem....is there anything that can be done for stress....the kids will be moving in about 4 weeks...so do we just wait until then or what do you think???? thanks again for your help......Marianne (scruffy52)

You might look into a product such as Rescue Remedy which is supposed to be helpful for cats in stressful situations. I've never used it myself but it may be worth a try in your case. I beleive you can purchase it at most health food stores.
