I was just reflecting how often over the last few days I've visited this forum.

You see, I have a white persian somewhere around 10. I don't know exactly how old he is as I got him from the local animal shelter. He was left there by an elderly couple that had to be placed into a retirement home and could not take the cat. Since he was no kitten and had a cataract, I didn't figure anyone would choose him...so I did.

For about a year now he has graced my household. He's been a great companion to my other cat (16 year old). They played and had a jolly time together. Then, about 2 weeks ago, my wife noticed that he was not eating as much as normal. We began to watch his eating habits and decided that we needed to take him to the vet because he was also not playing as much. The vet ran all the normal "chem panels" and couldn't find what was wrong with him. He was lathargic, failing to eat, runny eyes, had a blue tint to his tongue and his mouth, but other than that, his tests turned out all normal, so we took him home with some AD (soft cat food) and some Amoxicilian.

After 3 days, our "Casper" was getting visibly worse. He quit eating anything, and had all but ceased water intake. We could force some on him, but we knew it was not enough, so back to the vet we went for more tests.

The vet ran a few more tests including urinary and the chem tests that were run previously, determing that he had indeed lost weight, but still nothing to identify the problem. He prescribed Casper some Prednisone 5mg 2 times a day, which he told us would induce eating as a side effect of its treatment for IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome..which Casper doesn't have).

We gave him the pills, tried to feed and water him with a eye-dropper. He fought us, and his breathing got worse. You could hear the weezing. Phone call to vet turns no results, other than bring him in for x-rays. I ask about payment plans for the tests to come and I'm told "had you had your pets with us for years, then we would know you better and might set up something, but as it is we do not know you well enough".

I started mashing up his food so that it could fit into an eye-dropper, and tried to force feed that to him, as well as his water. It didn't work out well, half on Casper, half on us..no end in sight. Last night while worrying about his health, It finally became too much and I broke down. Who says men don't cry.

So here I am today, knowing that I cannot take him to the vet until after the 7th of the month which is payday (spent all I had for tests so far). My Casper is failing rapidly now, difficult for him to walk, will not go potty or eat/drink. His pills are doing nothing for his apetite..and nobody knows whats wrong.

I have exhausted myself, and my wife and Casper finally sleep. I'm on watch because I doubt he will make it through the night. All things die, and perhaps it is his time. I take him outside every little bit so he can enjoy the scents on the breeze and feel the grass under his feet, for there is little more I can do.

I know his last breath is near, and am happy that he has enriched our lives, and hope that if a god exists, he gives my Casper a place better than I could, for he truley deserves it. He is loved.....

Oh how your story brought tears to my eyes and an ache to my heart. What a wonderful and caring person you are.
I know how helpless a person feels when they can not help there beloved companion. It's to bad everything revolves so much around money. What is the matter with this vet? Don't they understand that by helping you out, they would be helping themselves out. When my vet offered to charge me half price to fix up a stray I found I was so grateful that to this day I continue to go there.

I am so sorry and I hope that everything turns out ok for you. Just know that YOU ARE in my prayers and sweet Casper to. Please take care....

Weel, I must say that my heart is touched. It sounds like Casper is truly loved and I'm sorry to hear he's not doing so well. Sometimes (even though its incredibly hard to) we just have to know when its time to let nature take its course. It sounds like you and your wife have done all you can thus far. You should try to be at peace with that. Just spend as much time as you can spoiling him and letting him know he is loved. When our beloved fur kids lack the desire to eat, drink, or play as normal ... they know - its time. Prepare yourselves and try to make the best of the time left with little Casper. He knows you love him dearly and he will never be forgotten. Best wishes for peace for you all and may god bless. My heart goes out to you.

Oh, how my heart goes out to you. I just had the same experience with my 11 year old cat Sparky. No matter what we did for him, nothing helped. I have been going to my vet for over 20 years and still they would not make a payment plan for me. I can't tell you the amount of money we have paid them over the years. I don't understand what's wrong with some of these vets. I have 4 other animals and I am changing vets. First of all, after blood tests and x rays, they couldn't tell me what was wrong. After 5 weeks, the second vet looked at the x rays that the first vet took and then decided he didn't like what he saw. So, they made my poor baby (and us) suffer all those weeks not knowing what was wrong and just watching him get worse and worse. He too, wouldn't eat or drink and just got weaker and weaker. He wouldn't even go to his litter box. He would walk 3 steps and just plop to the floor. We were giving him antibiotics, force feeding him and giving him fluids at home. He was running a very high fever so we had to put him in the hospital and after 2 days, he passed away. I know how hard this is but sometimes we just have to let go when our precious pets have no quality of life. It was just as hard watching him fade away as it was losing him. Good luck and please let us know what happens.

I wanted to thank all of you who answered my posting here. It was hard for us to take, the long hours, the false hope every time he'd look towards his water or food, the pain of watching a family member (pet) die. Our Casper finally passed away at 7:27 pm, June 28, 2003. He was the best kind of friend, and he will be dearly missed.

May life be kind for all you, as it has been for us.

I am so sorry for your loss. Watching a family member (pet) fade away is a very difficult thing. I did it for 5 weeks and I just can't get those thoughts of him out of my mind. They are in peace now and not suffering (but we are). If you need a good support group for pet loss, you can try. www.petloss.com. Just a suggestion. They are helping me through this very difficult time.

I'm so very sorry to hear about the loss of Casper. It's a very difficult thing to go through. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Casper is no longer suffering and in a better place now. Although we miss them dearly and we struggle through the healing process of loss of our little dear ones, we will always keep them in our hearts. Just remember him and know that he knew he was dearly loved by you and your family. His spirit will always be with you, snuggling at your feet and in your heart. God bless
