This sounds gross, but my three year old cat quit eating, and after a few days started vomiting profusely so we took him to the vet and got his tummy x-rayed. The x-ray showed five of my daughters hair bows, yes FIVE, in his stomach. The vet said surgery was his only option. Why he ate hair bows is beyond me but needless to say there are no more in the house now. He got through surgery well and his stiches came out a week later and the scar is healing nicely. He still wouldnt eat though. The vet did a Barrium x-ray on his digestive track and all looked OK except for a hard lump of constipation. The cat was given an enema and the blockage came out. This was two weeks ago and he still wont eat. He started vomiting bright yellow bile, the vet said his pancreas is full and therefore he is not feeling "hungry" which is why he wont eat and that we have to "jump start" his digestive system by force feeding him. By the looks of what I have read on this site I am not alone in having to force a cat to eat. Needless to say, a horrible experience twice a day. If the food would stay down I might not be so worried but every time we force feed him he vomits it all back up within 15 minutes or so. He has only had one bowel movement throught this whole ordeal also. I think it was just the barrium anyway. Therefore he is getting no nutrition and we are just torturing him twice daily for nothing. Frustration is starting to set in now. I feel like I am watching my baby die a slow death. I am going to try giving him a little mineral oil tonight to see if maybe he is still plugged up. If anybody has a suggestion I would be very grateful. Thank you for reading this. IP: Logged |

Hi Simbo WOW I cant believe he ate those hairbows. One of my Cats used to be constipated all the time. I used to give him PUMPKIN PIE Filling and a Laxactive Called "Laxatone". The laxatone comes in a tube and is sold at Vets offices. This helps them pass a stool. Also when the cats are constipated they will not eat. And YES when my cat forces himself to have a bowel movement he also vomits. Please try the Pumpkin Pie Filling and Get him the Laxatone. How Big Is He? Is he A Fatty like mine?? Hi Simbo Your cat needs the food even if he vomits it, so keep up the 'torture'. I suggest feeding him at 4 or more (even 6 times) a day, but only small amounts. Try 15-20 mls. Even give him 10mls and wait to see if he vomits, and give some more 20 mins later. I would force feed even after he vomits just to use some of the bile up, which will empty the pancreas. I know this is frustrating work, and your cat won't be thanking you, but its what you have to do. You cat will thank you when hes well again, so keep at it! Yours IP: Logged |

Thank you to both for your comments. It sure helps to know there are understanding people out there. Yesterday evening started with 5 ml. of mineral oil which stayed down. Yay! So an hour later I liquified some of the A/D food I got from the vet. It is supposed to be real good for sick kittys, High in protiens, fats and all that. I gave him 10 to 15 ml. of the liquified food and two hours later he had not thrown up. I thought this was optimistic so a couple hours after that I gave another 15 ml. of the liquified A/D. Bad idea. It all came back up almost immediately. Maybe it was just too much too soon for his shrunken little stomach? So here we are on Tuesday morning. Simbo had 10 ml. liquified A/D for breakfast and two hours later he has not thrown up. I am just hoping he will start keeping a little more down every day. A little nutrition is better than no nutrition. He is getting so frail and he is so lethargic. All he does is lay around. I guess no food means no energy, so that part at least makes sense to me. One good thing I did not mention is that he is still drinking plenty of water. He is still urinating regularly in his litter box but still no poop. To answer "SpidersMommy", thank you for the advice about the Laxatone. I am not sure weather he is constipated or if there is just nothing to his intestines to generate a poop. I will feel a lot better after he has a BM. Will also get some pumpkin pie filling if all goes well with the A/D. I would have never guessed. I forget how much he used to weigh but I remember making the comment that it's a good thing he has long legs or his belly would drag on the floor. He definately used to be a "Chunky Chicken" but not anymore. He has lost so much weight. His ribcage is showing, and when I held him last night I could feel his pelvis bone. Greypaw, excellent idea about emptying the pancreas. I will keep with the small liquid feedings but I am so looking foward to him eating something on his own. I figure I will leave him a plate of something semi-solid to look at and think about and hopefully temp him to take a bite. Thank you both again. Please stay in contact. IP: Logged |

Hi! I also knew of a cat who ate a rubber glove while sifting through the kitchen garbage. Who knew a cat could get that down?! Mine loves to eat rubber bands when she can get her paws on one! The small feedings are a great idea. Imagine how a human feels when they have eaten something after not eating foods for weeks. My guess is the same would go for a cat. Just another thought...maybe try some vegetable baby food. It will take some time for your kitty to get back to eating normally. Don't give up! Good luck! IP: Logged |

It is important at this stage to force feed him liquid vitamins. This will help restore some of his energy level and may make him want to eat. I am surprised the Vet did not suggest this already since he is not eating etc. Ask about this liquid vitamin. Mac IP: Logged |

Just a quick note. The liquid vitamin will more than likely stay down and enter his blood system better at this stage until he is ready to eat. Mac IP: Logged |

Hi Its good to hear some food is staying down. The A/D is good stuff. It is high energy, so even a small amount is good. You will probally need to get him up to 30ml 6 times a day before he starts eating on his own. Its good he is drinking, thats half your worries sorted then and there. Hello All Thank you for all of your responses and advice. Here is todays Simbo update. Tuesday night we got extremely concerned because his breathing became very rapid and labored and he would hide in closets and just stare at the wall. This is very uncharacteristic for him so we took it as a very bad sign. Wednesday morning we took him back to the vet. It turned out that he has a very bad bladder infection and that he was in a lot of pain. How he went from stomach surgery to a bladder infection is beyond be. We are now giving him a strong antibiotic the vet prescribed along with his watered down A/D food. He is managing to keep it down so we are mixing it slightly thicker and feeding him more frequently as per the vets directions. I dont think we are out of the woods yet but we all feel a little better about this than we did a couple days ago. He is more alert today than he has been in the last week and during last nights feeding he growled at me. We took that as a good sign. He is starting to get his fiesty-ness back. IP: Logged |

Just a quick update for those of you who helped us out. After a week of intensive hand feeding I believe our kitty is going to be OK. We hand fed him 25 ML of the A/D food three times a day. He got antibiotics twice a day and 5 ML of mineral oil twice a day. This morning after almost a month he finally had bowel movement so we know his innards are working again. What a relief. He has not started eating on his own yet but tonight will be temped with tuna. I mentioned before that he is getting his feisty-ness back, well it is getting hard to feed him because he is getting strong again and he pushes us around during a feeding. The funniest thing I have ever heard is Simbo growling and chewing at the same time. I try not to laugh because I think it makes him madder. Thanks to all who helped us out and to those of you going through the hand feeding battle, hang in there. It is painfully slow but did get good results for us. IP: Logged |

For those of you folling the "Simbo Saga" you know that things have improved but I have another question if anybody might have a suggestion. I think he forgot how to eat! As long as we are force feeding him he does all right but I have been encouraging him to eat on his own and I dont think he knows what to do with his food dish any more.
