I think one of my six cats has Lucemia. His name is Oliver and he's the youngest, only 2 years old. His fur is matted so badly that it feels like it's apart of his skin. His gums are pale-white and his bones (especialy his back bone) have gotten . . . well sharp. Not to mention his crusted eyes. He's eating and drinking fine but he won't get up and walk around anymore like he used to. He won't even allow me to pet him. My mom and dad say we can't afford to take him to the vet. He just lays around all day looking awful. Please help me. Any advice will do. I don't know what I'de do if I lost him.

Hi KittyCatLover

I'm sad your young cat is in such bad shape. I think Oliver is in desperate need of medical care and even with this help you need to prepare yourself for the worst. Judging by the symptoms you described, I doubt there is any non-medical means that you can help him by.

There is no easy answer for you except that to own any pet is a great responsibility and it costs money (sometimes a lot of money). To have any hope of saving Oliver you have to fight for him. Tell your parents they must pay for the vet's help. Plead, bargin, do anything. Speak to your church if you go to one, and ask for their support. Raise the money yourself if you need to with cash jobs like washing cars. At the last if there is no other hope you must contact the SPCA and give them the chance to help Oliver.

All of this is hard, and I know you are young, but hopefully you can make your parents realise how much you love Oliver and how much he needs medical care.

My other worry is that you mention you have other cats. Eventually they will get sick themselves, and you will go through this again. Please find a way to pay for Oliver's medical help so that when their turn comes you will worry about the ill-health rather than the money as well.

I hope things turn out ok.
yours

Hi Kittycatlover.

As Graypaw mentioned, being a pet owner is a big responsibility so why not just pack Oliver in a carrier and march over take to a vet's office right now and speak with them. Many vets will let you pay back the bill over time and will seldom turn away a sick animal. Have the vet look at him and give you their prognosis before any tests are done. They can sometimes tell you whats wrong without major testing and if testing is required, sometimes they can tell you approximately how much it may cost.

Good luck and let us know what has happened.

Thank you guys for trying to help. I'm sorry it took me so long to write back. Well, Oliver died. I should have expected that to happen. I guess I was just to late to realize how sick he actually was. He was a really good cat. My mom and I went to my gram's house out in the country to burry him. That's where we burried my oldest cat, Sydney. She was 23 years old.
Anyways, I know now that he's in a better place and I'm thankful for that. I wrote him a note saying how blessed I was that he was my little kitty and on how he got his name. Do y'all know that movie "Oliver and Company"? Well, that's where I got his name. Thanks for the help but he's ok now.

sorry to hear of your loss. Don't blame yourself there is not much the vet can do when leukaemia is diagnosed anyway. At least he has gone to a better place now.
