Only one of my six cats gets mats in her hair.
Upon close inspection it looks like dandruff is in the matted part of her fur.
What is getting stuck in her fur and how can I avoid this.
I brush her all the time and day to day she gets new matted hair (only on her back). She has 3 matted areas now and I have no idea what to do with this many.

Sometimes stuff like that happens and its hard to tell where it came from.

One time my elderly cat got spots of matted hair that would not go away. So finally, we simply cut away those spots and the hair grew back fine. It looks unattractive for a while, but it grows....

Yes, It's a very good idea to cut away the hair on the back, particularly to see if there's any skin infection there.
Is she scratching?
Is she free of fleas? Fleas can cause that too. If there is scale and/or redness under the mats then you may need to see the vet, as it could be a number of things.

Thank you Butterfly2catch and Woofdoggy!
I snipped the matted areas away and found no redness, scratching or fleas. I brushed her remaining fur and she is all healthy.
The only thing I saw in the matted areas was a dandruff like substance that is not present on the rest of her fur. I still have no clue what that substance was in her matted fur?
They are all indoor cats, they have only had fleas once since they have been in my care and that is when my house was burglurized and they left my front door open and the cats got out

I too have a cat that has the same problem. She has one patch on her back that is matted and has a dandruff type substance. No matter what I do it will not go away. I have cut it out, brushed it out, and got it out by hand. It just keeps coming back. It is sensitive to the touch but the skin is not red or does not have sores. I was wondering if you had found anything that has helped. Thanks..
