Hi everyone, I recently adopted a 6 year old cat from a humane society shelter. She's sweet, docile, and so far approves of me and lets me pet her and brush her, but she absolutely will not let me hold her or pick her up. It's not that I want to smother her against her will. She hates the vet and it would help during visits if I could gently restrain her without her getting all upset. Any seasoned cat owners out there with advice on how to get her to trust me and let me hold her? Should I just give up? IP: Logged |

My friend, Shaman, who I brought home from a shelter 6 years ago, wouldn't let me hold her the entire time she lived with us (until the day she died- and I do believe that was a special "parting gift") Her son, Cody, however, loves to sit in my lap. Each cat is different- I never tried to hold Shaman simply because I didn't know what she had been through before coming to live with me and respected that there probably was a very valid reason for her not wanting to be "constrained" in any way. Let Angel decide when it is right for you to pick her up, hold her, etc. and if she decides that it is never going to happen- know that that doesn't mean she doesn't trust or love you! Hi, Your cat may have been mistreated before you got her. If your cat lays on your lap etc.., then the cat is used to you. Some cats hate to be picked up. I would just try and hold her for very short times. Maybe carry her to her food dish and sit her down. Just try not force her. I hope this helps you. IP: Logged |

I'd forget it! I have three cats, one is a lap cat and loves to be picked up and cuddled. One likes to sit with you and tolerates being picked up. and the third one doesn't tolerate being anywhere near you unless it is on her terms, if you pick her up she struggles, scratches and yowls. Like us they all have their own personalities and some cats are not people cats. Yes she may have been badly treated but all my cats have been brought up in the same environment and they have turned out at opposite ends of the spectrum. Don't try to force her behaviour she'll only resent it and become even more alienated from you. IP: Logged |

I agree with Chris, not that she was mistreated as a youngin', just perhaps she wasn't held a whole lot in the first months of her life. The way a kitten is handled in its first 6 months or so is crucial to its later preferences as far as touch and cuddling go. So maybe when you pick her up she thinks "What the heck? What are you doing?" because she never had people pick her up so lovingly before. The fact that she lets you touch and flirt with her probably means she wasn't abused. Your best bet is to just give her time and let her get use to you. Maybe in time she will allow you to hold her but I wouldn't force it because you'll never gain her trust thay way. She's either been abused and don't trust anyone or she just doesn't like to be held. I know several good cats that just want let anyone hold them. I should know I've got two right now! IP: Logged |
