Please, any advice would be much appreciated...
I live on a large farm with many, many barn cats. People drop their cats and kittens off all the time and just leave them. We love cats and I really love being able to care of them all the time. I'm thankful that these cats are at least dropped off at a place where they will be fed well and loved very much. The problem is that each spring the females get pregnant, have their babies, and then many of the mothers immediately reject their babies. We've tried so many things because it's heartbreaking to have them die. We've shut the mother and kittens in a small room so she can't leave them and it looks like she takes care of them a little bit, but the babies still die. Other times, we can tell the mother had her kittens because her belly is no longer full but can't find the kittens anywhere and we know she isn't taking care of them because she's walking around all day when she normally should be with her kittens. Why do the mothers leave them? And why so many of the mothers? Once the mothers have that instinct, will it happen every time they have kittens? We would like to get them all fixed, but with 20 females and new ones being dropped off all the time, it isn't really an option. If you have any advice, please help us.
