My cat, Daphne, has a brown mucousy discharge from one of her eyes for about 8 months old. The vet has attempted to treat it with a bacitracin ointment but it never even clears up. Then she swabbed her eye for herpes and chlamydia, but both came up negative. Her advice was to go see a pet opthamologist, but the closest one is an hour away. Does anyone have any advice??? I would opt in the meantime to cleanse the eye daily, using a few drops in each eye, treating each eye separately and with impeccable sterility so as to avoid cross-contaminating the other eye. Apply a few drops of sterile eyewash,a saline silution, called Opticlear, you can buy it over the counter at a pet store, or order online from Jeffers Vet Supply or Omaha Vet suppply or Lambriarvet, to name a few. You can possibly opt to use Terramycin opthalmic eye ointment too, bought from them as well. Remember to NEVER touch the end to the affected tissue or anything, period. Keep it sterile! The saline solution will help cleanse and lubricate, the Terramycin can help with eye irritations, bacteria. I use these on my Persians and horse and Dobermans when pollen and all irritate the eyes, but I use the saline regularly to keep those tear ducts clean and healthy. Just a few suggestions. If it gets really bad though, the saline is not harmful to continue, don't overuse the Terramycin, and see a vet of course. I am only offering a few pointers to help in the interim. God bless.
