Hello! I have a serious problem with two of my cats. My first problem is with my Cat Legolas, shes about 4 years old and just last night her eye started squinting and looking a bit pink, I believe it's Pink eye on the account of my little sister had pink eye just last week and pets her a lot, but i'm not sure, should I take her to the vet? And the other thing is with my other cat, Katie. Recently we got a new dog that's a little fiesty and jumps around a lot, she's an indoor dog and sometimes she bothers the cats and eats their food, it's really annoying, well, Katie REFUSES to eat out of her bowl and is even scared to walk around the house. She's not starving herself because when I give her human food, she eats it. I'm really affraid of this and need help ASAP! please.

Hi Melissa.
Something else (allergy, physical object) might be irritating Legolas' eye- but it wouldn't hurt to call a vet and ask before you put your cat through the stress of taking it in (if it is just a scratch, etc.) Animals (contrary to many's beliefs) experience a very wide range of emotions. Katie is probably intimidated by your new friend- she might feel as though he/she is taking over an area that was formerly hers- perhaps you can move her food bowls to an area she likes and only she can get to (if possible) Try to keep your new dog from irritating her- over time, they will work out territory issues and might even grow to enjoy each others company.

I would definitely contact the vet about the eye problem it could get worse. As for Katie try putting the food up high where the cat can get it but not the dog or someplace the cat goes but the dog doesnt. When I used to have a cat I used to keep the cat food on top of our washer and dryer because my dog used to eat it. Even after my dog died we still had to keep it up there because she wouldnt eat it off the ground until she got too old to jump up on it( she got arthritis in the back legs) How long have you had the dog? If it hasnt been that long she will probably adjust. Just give it time. Good Luck and keep us posted.

Thank you so much for replying. Legolas seems to be doing ok now, her eye just cleared up...But Katie is still scaring me a lot. I did what you guys suggested, and she seems to enjoy it...But she wont even walk around the house. I have five cats, and they all seem to ignore the new dog, but for some reason, Katie doesnt. I'm thinking it's because of her age, I've had her for 12 years and I think she's used to being the highlight of attention, and now that I'm getting so many new animals, she's not happy like she used to be. But anyway, thanks for the replies! It helped a lot!

Melissa, I'm so glad Legola's eye cleared up. Regarding Katie, I think you've worked it out well - she's old and likes routine. Is the new dog a pup? Of course Katie would feel put out by its arrival, so make sure you give her plenty of attention and loving, but try not to favour one or the other. Just talk to her quietly, and the dog when it's around, and let them see you're not too fussed, and it'a a bit of a game. Though gently discourage the dog from bothering her too much. In time she will settle down and become accustomed to the new family. Meanwhile enjoy all your pets, it's just great you have so many. Good luck.
