Please help me find a way to get my kitty to eat she has no desire to do so. She has been drinking but only when we put it in front of her and even then it's only little sips. I did not know that when a cat drinks a lot of water that means that there is something wrong with them. If I would have known this I would have talked to my vet about this sooner. I thought she just liked water more than our other kitty. Bianca is only 2 years old and we took her to the vets because she wasn't eating or drinking, then told us that she would be ok with IV fluids after 24 hours so we took her to an emergency vet for that. They told us as soon as we got there that we should have her put to sleep because she didn't have much time left. But we couldn't see doing that for a cat that hasn't had much of a life and i would like to see her have a longer one. I do not know what to do with her, but I do know that I don't want her to be put to sleep unless it's definately necessary. I just don't understand why our regular vet would say that she was dehydrated and the other vet said she should be put to sleep? If you have any suggestions on how we can get her to eat anything, and drink more please let us know? Has anyone else had this problem with such a young cat? OMGosh I KNOW your pain. My cat was diagnosed with kidney failure when he was 20 years old. YES 20. His kidney failure was at 75%, and the vet said he only had 3-4 months left. YES one of the symptons of kidney failure is the cat will drink twice as much water as a normal cat and of course urinate more. My vet gave my cat some special expensive food. Well of course he did not like it. So I decided that if he was going to pass on me it was going to be with a full belly of 9 lives. My cat lived 4 more years. He was only put to sleep because he had glaucoma in his right eye and needed surgery and with his kidney failure he would not make it thru the surgery. So my cat was 24 when he passed and I can only tell you what I experienced. Our vet was the greatest, he ran tests on my cat when we told him he was drinking a lot of water. I swore I'd never get another cat after Squeaker :-) was put to sleep... but almost 1 year ago I got a kitten who looked NOTHING like Squeaker, well I'll be now that Chevy has matured he is a spitting image of Squeaker and I would not trade him for anything. I wish you the best with your cat, but if I were you I'd go back to my original vet and tell them what you were told by someone else. Have your vet run tests to see how far his kidney failure is. At one point my cats rate when down from 75% to 73%, not much but it still went down. IP: Logged |

I am so thankful that you took the time to write back. We did take Bianca to our regular vets monday morning where she remains on iv fluids probably until tomorrow. She has been drinking on her own and they put some sort of special food in with her that had gravy on it but she just licked all the gravy off! At least she's attempting to eat something on her own. I hope that we are doing this for a good reason, I don't want the cat to suffer just because we don't want to put her to sleep. I know that she won't live forever, but anything is better than not having her here at all with us. She's a great cat, and I hope that she pulls through this. I am glad that your cat lived another 4 years. I only hope that Bianca can do the same. IP: Logged |

I dont know if my cat was in pain, but if he was it never showed. He was still as playful as could be. Did your vet confirm its Kidney failure?? It's hard to part with an animal - very hard. I had my cat since he was 6 wks old, so believe me I didnt want to put him to sleep, I wanted him alive for me, but his glaucoma was painful and I couldnt allow that for him.
