My cats where both adopted from a shelter about 4 years ago. For all those year, aside from the occasional tiff, they have gotten along very well.
The female is extremely loving and gets along with everyone that enters the house.
The male is a bit more difficult. He has had some peeing problems, and whenever a little fight did start, it was usually his fault. But he is the more timid cat and is frighted by his own shadow sometimes.

Over the past 2 weeks however the situation has changed completely. It started with a couple really bad fights. The screaming that came from the cats was terrible. We broke up the fights, but we didn't see what had started them. The fights got closer and closer, and now they cannot be in the same room with out the female cat starting to moan and hiss.
What appears to be happening is that the female is terrified. She moans and hisses when she sees the male. The male gets bothered by this and then attacks. Usually the female ends up peeing as she is running away.
Please help. We currently are keeping them in separate parts of the house, but we really can keep it like this indefinitely.
I would appreciate any advise.

Just replying to your cats fighting. This same thing has just happened to us except we have four cats. All have been living together for over 2 years with no problems. Last night I heard a fight break out and two of the cats, a male and a female were fighting or screaming at each other the other two hiding. Now, after breaking it up all four cats are hissing and moaning whenever they see each other. It's been overnight and now all four are separated. If anyone has any suggestions that would be great. Just wanted you to know you're not the only one with this problem
