We just adopted a three year old female unspayed cat from a lady I work with. Her nephew was the former owner had a brain tumor and died. Apparently the cat was with him when he died.

I have two cats in my home already. One a male 9 years old and the other a female 19 years old. So far, they don't seem too interested in this cat and really haven't acted threatened.

This cat has not eaten or used the litter box in two days. All it does is hide in tight places and hisses at us when we get near it. I've talked to her gently; trying to encourage food and water. She bit my husband in the hand and scratched him. I know she is frightened and apparently never was with other cats at all.

My question: How long do we let her go on without eating? Also, we're concerned that she'll never adjust to us and will remain nasty. Do cats finally adjust to new surroundings? I'm sure she is traumatized from the whole event.

Thanks,

Sandy

If she has never been around other cats it may be a good idea to keep her in a seperate room away from your cats for a little while especially since she is scared, confused and upset and might feel threatened by your cats. This might also help you get her to trust you - you could try coaxing her with cat treats and catnip to come out of hiding if she still hides when she is placed in a seperate room. Try putting some canned food down for her (most cats go nuts over it)and see if she will eat that. Rescue Remedy may help calm her also. Here is a site that has helpful info. on new cat introductions - scroll down to "Introducing a New Cat to Your Household" - it also talk about rescue remedy. Good luck. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/9352/owners.html
