hello. i have a 10 year old male cat, whom i've had wsince he was a baby. recently in the past few montsh hes started loosing weight... within the past few weeks, severly.. he is down to skin and bones and flimsy when i pic him up and i noticed today he wobbles when he walks.. i'd like to know if this is just old age or if he is ill and hurt. cats ages vary, i know.. i dont have the money to take him to a vet, i can get him mediciine and all but vets are outraegous. oh and he also looses patches of hair on his ears, it comes and goes... any adive anyone has is greatly appriciated thanks IP: Logged |

I don't know how you can get legal prescriptions without a doctors order, and not taking him to a vet, but that would be my answer: He needs to see a vet ASAP. Blood tests or skin scrapes or x-rays cost money. ASk around for help. Otherwise, cost-wise,and cognitively, to have an animal as sick as this, maybe the only humane option is to put it to sleep. Elisha - have you talked to a vet about maybe a payment plan? I know some allow you to make payments if you tell them up front. Also, maybe there's an animal shelter there that has an onsite vet that will check your baby out at a reduced rate. I know where I live, they will do that. IP: Logged |

Hi my name is rose and I am sorry to hear of your cat being sick. I have been on the internet searching for other remedies too. My cat has been to the vet and they told me that he needed to be put asleep, he has a liver disease. I just thought your cat had the same symptoms as mine. Some of my cats symptoms are yellowing of the skin, mainly the inside of the ears. And loosing weight, and depressed acting. Walks up to his food and wants it then all the sudden changes his mind, or appetite. The best advice I can give you is keep him eating good cat food labeled low-residue and (keep)his vitamins in him. You can get the granules or chewables or you can get the jel type that most cats like the taste of. If all else fails try a 5mg vailum cut it in four pieces and try one piece a day. After you give it to him wait 15- 30 min. call him to the food, then you will most likely see him eat. But Dont use this very long (1-3 days)Not good on the liver. This is what my vet was doing for my cat. But now my cat is home be cause he was shuting down when he was away from home. Cats tend to do better when they are at home. I'm sorry to hear about your cat. It sounds a little like what is going on with my cat. He is a little over 9 years old and this past month we started noticing that his stomach was getting very round. I figured that it was due to the kids giving him more treats than he should be getting. Everyone wants to get into the act of spoiling him. So I have been laughing and telling him he's a spoiled fat cat. This past week he started becoming very lethargic. Doesn't want to play, isn't leaping up on my lap or sitting next to me and he is hiding a lot under the bed. And the past few days he is peeing in the living room. And he feels bony even though he has the huge stomach. So I brought him into the vet tonight. It's not looking good. His stomach is bloated because it is filled with fluid. The fluid is starting to get into his lungs and it is making it tough to breathe. There were two thoughts to what is happening. I'm confused about the first consideration for diagnosis, which was something about his body taking protein away from his muscles and causing deterioration, which explains the lethargy and wobbliness. For some reason it is causing the fluid buildup. I really didn't get all that he was saying about this because I was still stunned that this was a serious illness that my cat has. I'll ask him more about this tomorrow when he calls me. Anyhow, the second train of thought is not a good one. It could be Feline Infectious Peritonitis And Pleuritis (FIP). If this is the case, it is terminal. I guess this is a viral thing that they can get from other animals, and often found in animals from breeders. I'm still reading up on that one. I know how you feel about the cost. It is incredibly expensive to have tests run and I could only afford two tests tonight. I don't know what will happen next. I love my cat. He's a part of my family and he's my pal. I don't want him to die. But I also have to pay my bills and feed my kids. With the economy the way it is right now, we have had a tough time getting ends to meet, so this money isn't easy to come by to pay the vet bill. But I hate to tell you this.....your cat may be very ill and if there is anything that can be done for him or her, it will have to be through a vet. I hope that your cat will be okay, Elisha. Dear Alisha,i hope your cat is still with you.I lost my beautiful Jethro to kidney problems.He had similar problems.A blood test can be done in hours.Ask the vet about financial help from Rspca some vets are sympathetic and will others want to put animal asleep if they think you cant pay.But most vets do offer payment plans or send out an invoice with 28 days to pay.Dont feed dried food,its too processed.Feed boiled white fish,no dearer than tinned food if bought frozen from somewhere like farmfoods or ask fishmonger for scraps.Bolied chicken.Both can be done in matter of minutes in microwave.LOts fresh water.No milk no titbits.Cut it up finely.Small amounts and often.Tinned tuna is too rich.Tinned meat is full of eradicated tumours and ash and has little nutritional health benefits.Cat biscuits can cause lots of urinary problems.keep him out of cold and cherish him.You will have to watch what he eats for rest of life.Dehydration rapidly leads to death.Monitor his weight.There is a monthly injection the vet can give this was about £12 a couple of years ago to help and may have special diets they can recommend but may be dear.He does need to see a good vet.Try raising his feeding area as well to stop projectile vomiting.Encourage him with titbits flaked fish or chicken.Take care........ Sorry if my reply was taken in a way I did not intend, but the individual had a very ill cat, had no money to very little, and my intent was, that seeing the lack of money with a very ill cat,was to unfortunately end it's suffering. Sometimes words seem harsh I agree, but to own an animal is a big responsibility, and if one can't pay for it,and has no help, what is the solution? I meant no harm, and I can assure you, I will recede from answering further as I am an animal owner who wouldn't allow my pet to suffer,and I had no help. It is a last resort after much trying. You have to weigh the situation...did you give that thought before you berated me? Like I said, I meant no ill will, just a hard core decision we all have to make at one time or another. if you have not money or any way of getting the animal to a docter it would actaully be humane to put him to sleep like paulkine said my father is a vet and would kindly agree if you dont you are just making the cat suffer IP: Logged |
