Hello.... I have a kitty that has been inside for over two years and the last three weeks has developed soars around the back of his neck. We took him to the vet and had a test to see if it is ringworm, but is is not. They gave him a steroids shot and some medicine and spray for his neck. I have three other cats inside and they are fine so evidentally it is not catching. Over the weekend he has gotten worse and you can tell he doesn't feel good. I can't stand to see him so miserable! We are taking him to the vet again tomorrow. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this. It seems like he has an allergy or something but I can't figure it out. The only thing we have done different is we changed from Feline Maintenance Science Diet to the Senior Adult Cat Science Diet cat food because our other kitties are over 8 years old. But we changed the food about two months ago. Could he be allergic to the new food? I know he is lactose intollerent because he can't drink milk. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thank you for reading this.

We changed both our cats to science diet senior hairball formula, and they are both losing clumps of hair and shedding a large amount. They have never done this before, and the only change there has been is their diet. I am waiting to see if they adjust to the food, but it doesn't seem to be improving. I was givng them cheaper Purina Hairball formula and might need to go back to that. I saw that you stated you switched to science diet senior -- I wonder if this is a common occurence? My cats don't have open wounds or a certain area they are losing hair, it is generalized.

First off, I'd bathe him in a anti-fungal shampoo, apply a flea preventative or give Program, which I thank heaven for, as it rid him of his fungus, added tons of hair. And then I would add a fatty acid supplement to his diet to nourish his skin and coat. Many foods are lacking in this. I give my babies a tsp or so of mush food low in ash and magnesium, with a tad water mixed in, and fatty acid supplement each night as a treat. When it comes time for the lufenuron (Program liquid) they never know. And play more with him if you can.
By all these steps, you are nourishing the mind, skin, emotions, and general well-being of this cat. What could indeed be the problems: flea allergy, fatty acid deficiency, depression, or fungal perhaps. Just my 2 cents, best wishes now.

Pauline, I have a 5 month old kitten with ringworm and wanted to try Program. What is the dosage? Do I also need to apply a topical anti-fungal to the infected spots?

The Program, put out by Novartis Labs of NC, is very very safe, and is given according to weight of the animal. There are 2 packages of the liquid for the cat, in weight of:
0-10 LBS, and in weight of 11-20 LBS. The dosage for ringworm (of which there are several kinds of), is to give at least DOUBLE the dosage size for the cat, then, 2-3weeks latr, give that dosage again, and by the 6th- 8th week lesions are greatly lessened on average. Now, then, every 4 weeks give the normal dosage for the actual weight-1 pkg. Give it in about a TBSP or so of mush food so you know he has ingested it. That's how I give mine with no problems.

My cat had lesions all over, not relieved much by the vaccines or bathng in Dermazole every 5-7 days, so my vet tried me on that field trial study and after just one double-dose of it, I noted a significant change. So I gave 1 pkg instead of that 2nd (double) dosage. I was elated, but not only that, his fur got so darn thick because of his skin being healthy.
I now give it every 3 weeks, normal dosage, because I noticed the fur stays thicker and absolutely no dandruff/lesions since. Nor on me....I was going nuts because of lesions on me in the beginning.
Now remember, according to the field studies, not all cases are cured/treated and under control. Microsporum canis, the most common type of RW, has shown some resistance, and other types too. I question whether the people were as stringent as I was in the bathing using an antifungal shampoo such as Microtek or Dermazole though.
It all has to go together: vacuuming, bathing, and Program. Good luck now, and please let us know how kitty does, yes??
