We have an amazon parrot. Her name is Jo-Jo. We have had her for just a few months. It was a friend of a friend deal that we got her from, so, we don't really know much about her history. She doesn't have the little ankle bracelet like most birds I have seen. We don't know how old she is. She eats well, and keeps herself very clean. She has a few bald spots through out her feathers, but, I haven't seen her pull any of them out. She loves cucumbers. She loves it when I pet her by her tail, she'll purr like a cat. The only word she knows is "MA". I think she likes this word, because, she yells it all the time. She does not appear to like men. When my fiance goes near her, she'll flap her wings, and open her mouth, trying to bite him, if he keeps trying to pet her, she'll start growling & barking like a dog. My brother came over for a visit & she tried to take his ear off. She lets me pet her & will even climb onto me when I am putting her food dishes into her cage.I am not sure why she is like this. Is it cause for concern? Could it be because one of her previous owners, happened to be a male & possibly abused her? I have gotten quite attatched to this bird, and, I plan on keeping her. How can I help her get over her fear (or hatred) of men??

hi there i have a cockatiel thats exactly the same she is great with me but hates kids and my partner... the only thing you can really do is have your husband talk to her calmly everyday with out getting close to the cage after a week or so he cud try putting her food dishes in and talk to her at the same time a man at sum point in her life must have scared her or abused her but she will come around eventually female birds can just take to one person whenever you have her out of her cage sit next to your husband with her and say this is daddy or something along those lines and when she bites tell her firmly but not enough to scare her say no thats bad when she is ok with your husband get him to offer her watever her fav titbit is and she will soon realise he doesnt mean her any harm...hope this helps you if you have any more questions feel free to email me @ boro_lad1976@hotmail.com and i will help if i can keep me posted

thanks for the advise. i have already been trying that. my fiance tries to talk to her all the time, and, she will take peanuts right out of his hand. she doesn't try to bite him when he puts her food dishes in her cage, it's only when he puts his hand up to pet her. when i sit by him with her on my shoulder, she runs across the back of my neck to the other side. she has been like this since we got her. i am hoping that giving her time will help. i don't know how else to help her. my fiance gets discouraged, and says that she'll never like him. i try to explain that i am sure that she isn't choosing not to like him, that there has to be a deeper reason for it, like previous abuse. she really can be a sweet bird...very loving(towards me). she just hates men. thanks again for the advice.

was she originally a ladies bird if so that can be a factor as she is only comftable around women your husband doesnt need to feel like she will never like him she does or she would not take nuts from his hand if she was abused by a man it will take time for her to trust men i have a cockatiel that hates men yet i am a man and she is great with me she wasnt at first but all i did was wrap her in a towel and held her for about 1 hour aday and i spoke and petted her now she is fine it took me about 2months to get her calm with me has your husband tried petting her when your not in the room as when your in the room she might feel like you need protecting and he is a preditor

Some men may be too loud or fast for your bird. The bird may be frightened of him. Have him be slow and quiet around her. Because he may be ok when he is near her but when he isn't worried about that he may not be and that may frighten her. Pip Pip and'ave a bloody good evenin
