Hi, I am writing this on the behalf of a friend of mine. She has a beautiful blue and gold macaw named Bluebell and an absolutely gorgeous umbrella cockatoo named Big Boy. She recently moved across country and they are well, not happy. As much as she hates to see them go she needs to find them another home. A sanctuary more specifically. They bonded to her soo unbelievably well....well see for example, Big Boy the cockatoo...he walks instead of flies eventhough he isn't clipped, and he chases the feet of everyone except for my friend. Bluebell doesn't bite unless approached, she's really shy and pretty much stays away when strangers are near. But when it is people she knows will lay on her back like a baby and just play with her feet and my friend's hands. They are extremely beautiful but very possessive and would not do well in another home. That is why they need to go to a sanctuary where they will never be sold or adopted out but be able to live forever with others like them. What I was wondering is if you could tell me of any sanctuaries that are in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky...somewhere around these states? If the sanctuary has a website please list it in your post. THANK YOU!!!!!!!

hi there just a suggestion how long did your friend move and how long have the birds been unhappy as there might be no need for her to part with them i had the same problem with my birds and it took around 3-4 months for them to get used to new surroundings its a shock to there system as they get used to certain noises and smells and when that changes they go into shock parting with them might actually do more harm than good as you say they have a very tight bond with your friend and being seperated from her might actually push them over the edge but if your friend would prefer to take them to a sanctuary if she goes to a vet centre they might be able to find her a suitable sanctuary hope this helps my email address is boro_lad1976@hotmail.com if you would like further advice

My friend has had her birds well over fifteen years. These specific ones she raised since they were literally eggs. They've always been very possessive of her even to the point where they chase her kids around when Big Boy is supposed to be her son's bird. She decided to keep him because they don't hurt them just chase them around or away for about three feet. However, everyone else beware because they have no problem nipping you in the bud. She's been here for almost a year and a half. I talked to her and they've always been like this even at her old place. Its just now she has a lot more people around and her new husband, while he loves the birds to death is getting ate up a lot! Its soo funny he's very big and muscular guy and he runs away from these birds who bite his feet and ankles. They bite and don't let go as well. Bluebell bit him once for hugging my friend and he lifted his foot and the bird came with! While they are good natured with everyone while my friend is not there the second she enters the room they are like her little body gaurds and no one can get within five feet of her. At her old place not many people came over and now well, we're like one huge family always going there and she comes here every day and it's not like we're strangers to the birds. But they are very possessive. And now they are starting to get a bit nippy with her and a lot more aggressive with everyone else. Especially when she goes to someone and hugs them. She figures it is about time to let them go play with a few of their own species. It is like really hard for her and she really doesn't want to but she does you know what I mean? That is why she asked me to look around because she knows if it were up to her it would be put off and never get done. Granted knowing her she would probably be down at the sanctuary every other week to visit for a little bit lol.

sounds like they look at her as there mother since she has had them for so long....my suggestion is to find a really good sanctuary a vet is the best place to start as they have contact with all places like that or an animal welfare society. i have the same problem with one of my birds she is gr8 with me but when it comes to kids and my partner she dont like them hehehehe but from what i have heard most of the bird sanctaury's are lovely places and when seeing all the birds together you can tell they are happy...but as i say the reason for them being agressive is they look at her as either there mother or there baby and a biting habit is very hard to break... hope this was of some help for you keep me posted
