potty problem with my big cat

hey, I am sooo glad I found this site!
I just hope someone can help
My 16+ lb kitty has some long fur, and when I got home tonite I saw that he has some poop matted to his rear end. So Gross. It is about the size of a golf ball. I tried holding him down to clip it out, but all that accomplished to to terrify my poor cat.
He obviously cannot reach well enough to clean it himself.
Can somebody Please give me some advice, I am worried I'll have to take him to the vet if I can't take care of it soon.

okay, so the big problem is fixed. But now he is sore... any suggestions?

Tinker gets a lion cut once a year and my mother makes sure to keep his bottom clipped (no pun intended).
If your kitty's bum is sore you can use unscented baby wipes on him. I'm sure he'd enjoy having you keep his back end clean for him. But the unscented wipes are okay to use.

thanx, but the real problem is that he doesn't want me anywhere near his rear end, so even for a quick wipe I pretty much have to pin him down. Maybe he'll get used to it if I use the wipes regularly?
Also, does your mother clip her cat herself? What kind of clipper does she use?

he is still walking funny, but he must be feeling better-he's "talking" to the birds again

I'd wait until he is in deep sleep and snip the rear fur with a regular pair of scissors. I had to do that for Pumpkin (RIP) occassionally. Glad he's feeling better.
