Poor Boo is losing her fur!

Boo is almost 15 ys. old, and is long haired. The last couple of years, she has gotten to the point she doesn't groom herself very well any more(maybe arthritis?). She keeps getting these bad mats in her fur. She will tolerate me brushing her head and neck, but boy, when I comb and cut the mats by her lower back and butt, she tries to bite us. I have noticed that on both sides of her neck, and by her butt, she has bald areas!! I am going to take her to a groomer to try and get the rest of the mats out, and then to the vet to see why she is going bald. I feel terrible for her, I have never seen anything like this! I think my best bet, with her age and all, maybe is to periodically have her shaved.

my mother has her long-haired cat shaved a couple of times a year. He hates being brushed too. Once she gets him shaved she finds it easier to help him maintain his coat.
You might want to get you cat's thyroid checked. One of the symptons with that is fur loss.

Pumpkin is 13 and she gets matted fur 1-2x year. I cut her mats but she looked so funny. Then I got her shaved and her fur grew back better. Now I keep a strict regiment on her grooming and she's been fine ever since. Bald spots is something to watch out for. Could be lots of different causes. Please let us know what the vet says.

Poor Boo. I hope she'll feel better after getting a nice grooming at the groomers.

My one kitty gets mats on her sides near her tail and I have to either comb them out or cut them out. I try to keep up with the combing so she doesn't get any but they mats still sneak in there.
