My cat is having huge breathing problems. I took him to vet on Saturday morning and they could not work out what was wrong with him. Xrays showed nothing so I was told to come back on Monday (tomorrow) but in the meantime he is not able to eat, drink or even sleep!! I am beside myself with worry. All he can do is take short, wheezing gasps of air and he has not had any water or food since Friday. I can't stand seeing him suffer. Has anyone else experienced anything similar with their cat? I feel that he should have been kept at the clinic where he could get proffessional care but I live in a small town and as it is a weekend their is limited help available, and as mentioned earlier, they told me to bring him back on Monday. He was given a large dose of cortisone but it has not made any difference in the last 24 hours. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

i worked as a vet tech for a small town vet and even she had an emergency phone number for such situations.

Call your vet!!

And good luck!!

I agree call your vet!!!! And if you can't get any good answers start calling around. There must be another vet even if you have to drive aways.
They should never have let your cat go home with no diagnosis and still in bad shape. I wouldn't even go to that vet again

Hi. I'm sorry your cat is not doing well right now. Sad I agree with the others. Call your vet first and see if they will see your cat a.s.a.p. If not call other vets in other towns. I wish your kitty all the best and hope everything turns out okay. Let us know what happens.

I would just like to thank you all for the supportive comments. I have some semi good news... He had his first drink of water today since Friday!!! It was only a small drink but its a start. I took him to the vet again and this time he was given antibiotics. He is to have another injection tomorrow morning and then if there is still no improvement, he will be referred on to a specialist for an ultrasound and other tests. His breathing even seems to have improved a bit. It's hard to tell but even the slightest change is enough for me to hold onto some hope... this has definately been one of the hardest things I have ever been through. I thought I might tell you a bit about him- being able to write about him seems to be helping me alot because I have felt very alone and helpless.

My cat is a 2 and a half year old burmese x red himalayn named Ifrit. His illness came on so suddenly that it has been a complete shock. There was no lead up to it - he just started to have trouble breathing. Before getting sick, Ifrit has always been very affectionate, loving, and playful. He is like a child to me. I don't want to think about what things will be like without him if he doesn't pull through. The only thing I am certain of is that I have been so lucky to have had such a wonderful companion- even if it ends up being only for a short time. I hope people don't think I am crazy! I have been grieving for him just as if he is a person, but that's just the way I feel about him. Anyway I don't mean to ramble on... I'm just going to try to stay positive and hope for the best.
Once again, thanks for all you support.

don't grieve yet - you have to keep a positive outlook to help him keep strong to get better.

*hugs*

Sending out best wishes for young Ifrit. It's awsome to hear you got him to the vet and he's getting medical care.

Thank you for the update, looking forward to hearing more!
