Well first thanks for the help with the pacus they are doing fine know and eating everything thing in sight. Included my plants. It seems impossible to keep the cichlids in there due to the ph differences. So I decide on taking out the Malawi cichlids and put them in there own tank. I purchased a 29 gal recently and was wondering what the best substrate to use is. I'm not sure as they are diggers should they have sand or small rocks. What's the best to use they would not injure them. Or is sand to small for them. Seems they might be inclined to ingest some.

Unfortunately, with the africans you have, a 29 isn't going to be big enough in the long run. Of course once you get your pacu a much bigger tank (how big are you planning, btw?), you could transfer them back to the 55.

Anyway, sand is fine. Personally, I like coarse sand but fine sand is good too. Just make sure you stir the sand around a little every week so it doesn't develop anaerobic pockets.

They also like caves. I'd recomend at least one per fish.

Thats the plan with the pacu and the cichlids. I planning on about a 400-500 gal.

I'd try for no smaller than 600 gallons for the pacu.
