Hello...I am new to the forum and attempted to send you an PM, but didn't know how.
I was doing a search for dog allergies and found a post you made a few years ago. My dog has allergies and I'm trying to figure out exactly what it is that's making him have constant yeast infections and that makes him scratch and chew. I noticed that you feed your dog Innova and other products. That sounds like my story. I've tried all the premium foods. Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Nature's Balance. Would you please tell me what diet you have your dog on now? I understand that you feed your dog the raw diet, but I would like to know the detail of this, if it's not too much trouble. I did a search through your posts, but couldn't find out specifically what you did. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thank You! |

Hi and welcome, As you read from my posts I have tried everything. I really think the Innova sent him over the edge with his yeast problems/allergy problems.
I finally went to a holistic vet we have here. And he recommended a raw diet. I was at my wits end with Jakes problems so I went for it.
He is so much healthier now and his energy level has gone thru the roof.
So here is the plan the vet gave me. he said it was essential to get his immune systems back on track, which he said a montht for every year he is old before you will see a lot of improvement. for me almost 2 years
he was on the yeast program from this site
http://www.nzymes.com/
and ester vitamin C
then I give him already prepared raw from this site
http://www.grandadspetfoods.com/
he gets the beefheart/chicken blend
its very important, they get the organ and bones in their diet when doing raw I also add brown rice and veggies a few times a week along with a raw egg and shell.
I do the premade diet because I cant bring myself to to just give him a hunk of raw meat. plus he would swallow things whole.
here are a few good sites for Q and A and raw diets
http://www.njboxers.com/faqs.htm
http://www.geocities.com/paisleydals/barf.html
pleas elt me know if I can answer anymore questions
and Jimiya is real helpful too, she has her dogs on raw too |

A few questions....do you know of any other companies that sell products similar to granddad's? It has a minimum 30 pound order and I have a Yorkie. I'm like you, I don't know if I could give him a hunk of meat and I can't help but worry about bones. I do give him marrow bones though, but I read on one of the sites you listed that marrow bones are not enough. He needs more calcium sources. I have started to give him a little beef, but would like to have the meal complete and nutritional. Do you know if people give their dogs bonemeal? If so, do you know where I can get some?
Thanks! |

Should organ meat be feed daily? What about carbohydrates? What do you use as a carb source that doesn't cause yeast problems?
Thanks Again! |

A few of the sites I posted have good books a creating recipies. and how much you should give
onveggies/meat bones and organ meat.
I think they say organ meat a few times a week, but you could find that in one of the books.
Do you have high quality pet stores in your area, you can also look at freezedried brands sinc eyo have a small dog.
Boy I would love to be able to feed a yorkie, Jake is #100 going the premade route is expensive for me but has saved a lot on vet bills
below is a pet site that sells bonemeal.

they say a dog doesnt need carbs on raw, but Jake is a carb junky, so I do give him brown rice a few times a week. I also get canned carrots from the $ store and add that too. Sweet potatos are good too. I like the canned veggies because they are already parcooked. and wont harm the digestive system.
the eggshells and ground up bones in his food along to give him the calcium he needs.
Kymythy Schultz on the one post has a good book on feeding raw |

I buy food at the grocery store for my dogs. A yorkie would be pretty inexpensive to feed. Feed about 2-3% of his ideal weight daily, as a starting point. Then you adjust based on how he looks. Feed things that are about 75% meat and 25% bone. Probably chicken legs might be a good size for a yorkie, but it depends on his size. Chicken wings are usually too much bone and not enough meat to eat regularly. You can give him turkey necks to gnaw on, or maybe chicken necks if the turkey is too big. Or hack the turkey necks into pieces. I give organ meats every day or every other day in smaller amounts. They should be about 10% of the diet. Liver is important but you can overdo it. Start slow with organ meats or it could give your dogs the runs!
I feed two meals. The morning meal is organ meats, canned fish (no more than once a week because of the salt), a raw egg, or some combination of the above. For instance, I may feed some beef heart and a piece of beef liver, or chicken gizzards and hearts plus a chicken liver, or a can of sardines (in water, no salt) with a whole raw egg. It's a pretty small meal. The evening meal is always a raw, meaty bone of some sort - chicken leg quarters, pork ribs, a whole game hen, beef ribs, duck, lamb, etc. My dogs are 50 pounds each so they eat about a pound a day.
There are no recipes and nothing to prepare. I just take them outside, toss the food on the ground, and they eat it. Dogs are meant to crunch up raw bones - it's what they do. Don't give cooked bones, though.
If you want more info, let me know. |
