I don't believe barred owls are capable of killing a full grown cat. And they eat their prey whole - kinda hard with a cat.
I used to have one that sat in a tree outside my house, over my birdfeeders and every night I would stand under the tree and talk to him (yes I'm strange Shocked ). So I asked my vet and Fish/Game if the owl could be a threat to my cat, used to let her out, and no they weigh approx. 2-3 lbs., bones are hollow so they wouldn't physically be able to carry a cat off, eat their food whole as they don't have the ability to tear into flesh like an eagle or hawk could. And taking on a full grown cat leaves them vulnerable to injury. Mice, toads/frogs, small birds are their primary prey.
Figured that might help. Maybe your cat was "borrowed" by someone in your neighborhood. I had that happen once. My tiny Siamese was living with someone else for 4 days.
Sorry so much has been happening to you. Life certainly can aim a brick at our heads

thanks everyone, its good to be back... as far as the owl goes im not sure if thats the right name of the owl but hes big.. definatly over 2-3 lbs and the only reason i think he got her is b/c my neighboors dog came up missing one night and she came over crying the next afternoon and said that an owl was eating her dog, her dog was a rat terrier or chi. something like that anyways sure enough he was on the ground ripping it in parts... it was nasty.. so im not sure if he did end up getting it or if the dog was already dead or what...soo anyways since then we have contacted fish and wildlife and they are supposed to come and trap and release him some where else...since that night though we have heard him out there and he will come and sit on the power line right above our pool and will just watch us.. soo no mary u are not weird..lol i talk to him as well..lol he is a neat critter thats 4 sure... there are more then 2 owls out there though u can hear 2 adults and then u will here like a baby owl its soo cute...i wish i could see the baby i bet hes sooo cute... but then again w/ princess those dogs that got chyanne could have as well gotten her who knows???? but i havnet seen those dogs in a long time so i dunno... but we to have had a time w/ my old cat jason (rip) came up missing when eh was alive and ended up comming home after a whole week and even w/ our adds up no one ever contacted me until he came home and it was some old woman saying that it was her cat that he lived w/ her 4 a week, but all in all we got him back and the old lady ended up w/ a kitten...sooo i dunno i just wish they would understand that they are not allowed out b/c mommy dont want anything to happen to them that im not just trying to be mean, but they are like kids and they are gonna do what they want if they can get away w/ it...and worry their moms liek crazy in the process. lol
