is heading out to help cat victims of Katrina....you can help financially if you wish. Here is her post

Hi everybody,

On behalf of Kitten Rescue (a Los Angeles based all-breed nonprofit for cats), I am heading to the New Orleans area on Sunday to volunteer for 4 or 5 days helping the kitties of Hurricane Katrina. As I am sure you all know, rescue efforts have pretty much been slim to nonexistant for the pets in the affected areas, and many people were forced to abandon their pets by the police and government officials. I am flying down and driving back thanks to a one-way SUV rental.

I will be volunteering at one of the temporary shelters that has been set up to triage/treat/medicate/comfort the evacuated cats. As much as I would like to go into the front lines and rescue from homes, it doesn't make sense for a person who can't swim to go where the water is higher than her head. Smile I will be taking several suitcases full of supplies including much-needed medical treatment equipment. We understand that cat food is not needed thanks to the generosity of several cat food companies and stores like Petco.

I will be posting pictures and a "trip diary" for all to see online, assuming I can get a connection. Link to come.

If you would like to donate toward my expenses, you can make your donation through the Kitten Rescue web site. All you need to do is use the Paypal link at http://www.kittenrescue.org/donate.htm and please note in the comments field that this is for Cathy Atkinson's trip to New Orleans so KR can keep track of what comes in. Donations are going toward my travel expenses but will also be used to buy needed supplies for the cats once I am down there.

Please feel free to cross-post/pass this along to anyone you know who may be interested in helping out.

Thank you! I appreciate all the positive thoughts, prayers and well wishes that I know you will send with me.

Thanks for posting this. I just donated via Paypal. My heart goes out to all of the thousands of pets and everyone else affected by this terrible tragedy.

Mary, has there been any word on how Cathy's mission is going? I wish that I could do what she's doing. She's a hero in my book. I wish her all the best!

I also wanted to add that at my work we work closely with a cat rescue and the lady that runs the rescue was telling me all the rescues in the area are expecting 600 cats from Katrina and each rescue is responsable for a certain amount of cats. I live in southern California by the way. Im hoping to foster one of the Katrina cats.
