yes, they are related to south american cichlids, but they are not a cichlid, as you can see by the body shape and aggression.

This can get quite confusing...the experts can call a fish cichlid, but that doesn't mean that they can co-exist in a tank together. The name is Cichlidae or cichlid and they include angel fish, oscars and rams. There are also the african malawi and tanganyika and many, many more.

The neon tetra is related to the pirhana...don't rely on any of this for tank stocking!
